Found Time- Between the Holidays

by Joanne Rock

I love the week between Christmas and New Years. The hardcore holiday prep has passed, leaving me with a week of relative quiet to enjoy the family, the dΓ©cor I worked hard on, the good leftovers and—did I mention?—the relative quiet!

Duchess and I are on the same page.
Ideally, I never plan much for this time of the year. I block it off as holiday time and try not to work much. Lucky me, I know. But I notice even friends with more traditional jobs are often able to take lighter schedules this week. And, failing that, there’s less “work” in that the baking, shopping, wrapping frenzy is over. I love Christmas and the hoopla that accompanies it, but the downtime afterward feels just right—sort of like a quiet scene in a book that follows that big action moment! Both are good, but one helps you catch your breath from the other.

Today, I have a list of minor errands but they can all wait. I have a few Christmas returns, a post office run to make, a prescription refill… nothing urgent. First, I’m enjoying getting back to a routine, something that always comforts me. I like the ease of mind that comes with routine because the repetition lets my mind wander. I don’t need to be terribly mindful fixing my go-to breakfast or doing the laundry, so I can think about my stories and characters in a way that doesn’t feel like work. Basically, I daydream, and that’s always fun for me.

Beyond that, I’m going to have fun searching up new book releases and doing some reading. I have a hockey game to watch tonight (go Pens!) and my dinner is going to be something like Tostitos with cheese since I’ve eaten relentlessly for days and don’t need one more decadent meal. My feet are up and I will check out social media for the first time in days so I can enjoy photos of friends’ kids and grandkids that they snapped over the holidays. A day of perfect aimlessness.

Happy 2017 to you all, my friends. I hope it brings you blessings, happiness and much love.

So I’m curious what you’re up to this week. Reading? Playing with something new that was under the tree? Share with me today on the blog and I’ll send one random commenter a prize with SCANDALOUS MISTRESS, a sexy 3-in-1 of stories by Leslie Kelly, Kira Sinclair and me, plus a Desire 2-in-1 with reads from Kat Cantrell and me, and a bonus notebook for your New Year’s resolutions!

I'm working all week and reading Bleeding Love by Harper Sloan at night whenever I get a chance 😊

I did NOTHING yesterday. Watched Age of Adaline, ate leftovers, took a much-needed break. Now I'm starting to put stuff away, doing laundry, putting the house back together.

I am getting the house in order and taking care of chores that have been put off. Also, I have a couple of books that I am going to finish up reading.

Just finished packing up Christmas and the house is spotless. Kids are happy and getting bundled up to play in the snow. I read Anne of Green Gables and I'm ready for a new great book to read.

I plan to use the next few days to unwind from the craziness, then repeat the process the first couple of days in January.

I'm completing my cardiac rehab and graduating from the therapy. I had open heart surgery in Aug for aortic valve replacement and have had a few complications so this day is huge for me and I'm more excited for it than I was for Christmas

Taking care of a puppy, new pet of the family and we love her to pieces but sadly 2 days ago started her period and it's very difficult to train her to poop and pee in one place. I did all the cleaning for her and following all her mess all over the house πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. I will get back to my reading soon-- I hope! Happy Holidays!!

After my grandchildren left on Mondays I took a nap. When I woke up I told my husband that it was leftovers for dinner. I ate 3 kinds of desserts for my dinner. Yesterday my arthritis was back and I couldn't hold anything with my hands, so I read a book on my laptop computer and we ate more leftovers. Today I am reading and doing laundry. Tomorrow I am reading and taking down the Christmas decorations. No other plans beyond that.

Katie!! Congratulations on your engagement! So exciting and *of course* you have wedding dresses on your mind. I hope you find the perfect, beautiful gown--on sale!

Denise, my son is playing basketball all this week too. It was such a huge help to me when he started driving. I couldn't believe how much less choppy my writing days were when I wasn't hopping in the car every few hours to cart someone to school/practice/game, etc.

Jean W... hope you feel much better with some rest. Arthritis is horribly unfair. Sometimes mine is worse when I don't get enough exercise. Contrarily, sometimes it's worse when I get too much activity. It's a "walk on eggshells" disease in more ways than one. Hugs to you.

I have been trying to catch back up on my reading! I follow an online bookclub on Youtube/Booktube, it's called #onthebooktubeshelf, and we are getting ready to ready our book for January (we've been reading one book a month). The book for January is Lilac Girls, it's a WWII fiction novel, and I really enjoy WWII novels, so I'm excited to get into this one! I hope everyone has a very Happy New Year!!😊
