Christina Hollis: My Favourite Things...

myBook.to/MyDreamGuy
On sale 15th September! myBook.to/MyDreamGuy
My family and good health top the list of my favourite things, of course, but I've been very lucky in that three more things I enjoy combined to make this a great week for me...

Countryside: I've lived out in the countryside nearly all my life. When things are going well and the weather's nice, there's nothing like it. It's not always sunshine and holidays, though. One winter we couldn't get the cars to within half a mile of our house for nearly three weeks!

By the middle of an English September, nights are noticeably drawing in. This year there's been a real nip in the air, which isn't always the case but makes it important to enjoy good weather while we can.

I hope summer still has a while to run. Just in case we're shivering from now until next spring, I've written a short, summery romance, My Dream Guy, to capture some of the fun. It's set in our local countryside and will be published tomorrow, Tuesday, 15th September. You can reserve a copy of My Dream Guy from Amazon by clicking on this magical link: http://myBook.to/MyDreamGuy

Holidays: When I worked in an office, I lived for the weekends and holidays. As a full-time writer living the dream, holidays are a lovely treat—but I never stop work. I've always got a notebook and pencil to hand, so I can jot down anything and everything that takes my fancy.

My holiday notebooks really turned up a treat when I wanted to escape from one particularly dark, cold, and wet February day. I got the idea for a romance set in sun-drenched Greece. His Majesty's Secret Passion turned into my perfect escapist fantasy, with an exhausted businesswoman and a king in disguise finding fun in the sun at a luxurious spa.

His Majesty's Secret Passion was the first book in my Princes of Kharova series for The Wild Rose Press. It's up for nomination in The Romance Reviews Readers' Choice Awards, Winter 2015, so if you're feeling kind I'd be really grateful if you could cast your vote for His Majesty's Secret Passion by clicking here!

Romance: If you follow me on Facebook, you'll have seen the spectacular surprise my OH sprang for our wedding anniversary a few days ago. I love romance, especially when a story involves two contrasting characters discovering they can turn there lives around by becoming first a team, and then a couple. This is how it happened for me and OH in real life.

In the second book of my Princes of Kharova series, Her Royal Risk, I gave Krisia and Athan some enormous challenges before they found their happy ever after. Their story touched a nerve, and readers tell me they identify with the frustration both Krisia and Athan feel when conflicts between life and duty put them on opposing sides of a problem.

Her Royal Risk also qualifies for inclusion in The Romance Reviews Readers' Choice Awards, Winter 2015. I'd love you to cast your vote for Her Royal Risk by clicking here. Thank you so much!

Will you be able to enjoy your favourite things this week? There's a signed copy from my backlist on offer for a comment picked at random next Sunday, 20th September.

When she isn't cooking, gardening or beekeeping, Christina Hollis writes contemporary fiction starring complex men and independent women.  Her books have been translated into more than a dozen languages, and she’s sold nearly three million books worldwide. Becoming Real...

I've always loved The Velveteen Rabbit and that idea of becoming "real."  As a writer, I've always endeavored to make all my characters are "real" as I can.  One of the biggest compliments a reader can give me is to tell me that they felt as if a character was a neighbor, a friend...they felt they were so real they could imagine that sort of connection.

And it's not just that I want readers to fall in love with a hero, or want to be friends with a neighbor, but I want them to feel that connection with my secondary characters.

I wrote Nana Vancy for the Everything But...Series.  In the first three books, she accidentally cursed her family to bad weddings.  After she broke the curse in the last book, readers kept asking for more. So, Nana Vancy tried her hand at matchmaking (alas she wasn't very good at it LOL) in three more books.  She found her calling matching dogs up with their real forever homes.  And in that capacity she has had a few cameos since that last book. She showed up in Christmas in Cupid Falls and even in Carry Her Heart.

I was so thrilled this week to find out that Nana Vancy's first books, Everything But a Groom was included on Booklist's Top 101 Romances in the last 10 Years.

As a reader, do you have characters who've become "real" to you??

My first real crush was with a character from a number of Robert Heinlein's books, Lazarus Long.  He was snarky, wore kilts and had red hair.  What's not to love?

So how about you?

Looking forward to autumn with Kate Walker

Almost every morning before I get to my desk, I go for a walk in the local park. From there,  there’s a path that leads to the woods and I walk all round the woods as well. It’s a lovely way to start off my day. I have some peace and quiet to think. I get my exercise – essential seeing as the day job usually keeps me sitting most of the day – and I get to see the changing seasons up close.  The past few weeks have been lovely and mild so that I got to see the rabbits frolicking in the sunlight, or the squirrels running up the tree trunks.  Robins, magpies, crows, sparrows, all fly about the woods and I can hear the woodpecker hammering away at a tree trunk up above my head.

But this morning it was a very different sort of day.  There was a chill wind and a lot of rain. Suddenly it was so obvious that the season was changing. Summer is over and autumn is on its way in.  There was a sort of melancholy feel about it, but at the same time there was an excitement and anticipation of the new season that’s starting.

I’ve often talked about how I love this time of year. New Term. Back To School. New (School) Year – all these things mean that there’s the anticipation of new beginnings and all the shops have  lots of lovely stationery and pens to mark ‘Back To School’ time. But there are other reasons why I love this time of year. Reasons I’m looking forward to Autumn -  So I thought I’d share some of them with you.

I’m not really very good with a lot of heat. Sunshine, yes, but hot days really exhaust me so I’m haf bach mihangel – Michael’s Little Summer – St. Michael’s Day being on 29 September) but it is rarely as hot as the height of summer. And I love that.
happy about the cooler days. We might still have an Indian Summer (or as we used to call it when DH and I were at university in Aberystwyth in Wales

The changing colours. I love to see the way that the trees start to change colour – to turn from green to gold to brown.  I’ve always loved the ‘autumnal’ colours so I shall wear some of those too.
Shoes – and boots – I love boots -   high boots, ankle boots, black, burgundy . . .  I just bought myself a wonderful pair of flats in metallic leather – can’t wait to wear them with opaque black tights. My sandals don’t feel right any more and I can’t wait to get into boots!

TV  - I’m in the UK  so this will be slightly different here – but  the autumn schedules start – last weekend we had Lady Chatterley’s Lover ( Richard Madden, James Norton) coming up  are the new series -  Dr Who. Downton Abbey,  Sherlock,  Strictly Come Dancing, Jekyll and Hyde. (And meanwhile  Aidan Turner is filming the second series of Poldark and James Norton is working on  Grantchester 2) These are good ways to spend darker cooler evenings. And that’s before I consider films – the live broadcasts of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Hamlet – Tom Hiddleston as Hank  Williams.
Or theatre – so far I have tickets for The Importance of Being Earnest, Mack and Mabel,  Kiss me Kate . . . I  will be spending most of Autumn watching great acting!

Real fires. We’re lucky enough to have a real fire in our living room. It hasn’t been used for five months – I can’t wait to lay the wood, add the coal, strike a match . . . and the cats just love to curl up in front of it.

And if the fire’s lit and I’m not watching TV – there’s always the bundle of new books coming out.  The fire in the hearth, a cat on my lap – a good book . . .

Autumn is also a time when I go to London to meet all my friends and fellow authors  at the Association of Mills & Boon lunch. This time it’s extra exciting as  for the first time we’ll get to see the brand new M&B offices  in the News Building in Central London .

October I’ll be running a guided retreat  Focus on Writing Romantic Fiction. This means I get to spend the weekend at The Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick Derbyshire – and I’ll
meet up with students, some of whom are already friends – and get to spend the weekend talking about writing – what’s not to like?

Oh, and I seem to have a lovely set of books  coming pout this autumn too. There’s the Australian collection of my 3 books about the Alcolar Family  called The Notorious Alcolars. A brand new  English Manga Comic edition of The Greek Tycoon’s Unwilling Wife.  And the one I’m most looking forward to of all – the publication of my newest title Destined for The Desert King.   (I just love the Presents cover for this one!)

All I need to make my autumn complete will be to have written – and had accepted  - a new book ready for the new year. I’m working on that one. And that’s the other great thing about autumn. Because it’s not so warm and because of that ‘new term’ feeling, I always write so much better and more  concentrated in autumn. I’m hoping to get this new book  (Rose and Nairo’s story) to my editor very soon.

So that’s why, although I’m sad to see the summer fade, I’m also excited by the prospect of this new season and I’m, really looking forward to Autumn and all the promise  that it holds.

What about you?  Do you love autumn – fall -  whatever you call  it?   Or are you dreading the darker nights and the cooler days?  I’d love to know what you’re looking forward to.  But let’s agree not to talk about the C word - Christmas -  just yet!!

My  latest romance  is Olivero's Outrageous Proposal published in April in Harlequin Presents and Mills and Boon Modern Romance . Coming next  Destined For The Desert King  which is published in December this year.
is

Then there's the  12 Point Guide to Writing Romance, the newest edition of which is available on Kindle or a revised and updated paperback edition now available on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com

One Night With The Playboy

I'm so excited about the latest Whiskey River release One Night With The Playboy.  From the beginning when Eve and I divided up the brothers and I got Nick, he intrigued me.  I didn't really know his story.  Just that he was a playboy and I knew that he'd have slept with a woman and she'd show up with his baby.  But as I got to know Nick over the course of the Whiskey River series I realized that there was much more to the charming playboy than just sex appeal and a gift for making a woman feel like she's the center of the universe.

When I wrote the opening everything sort of came together.  I think in a way Nick is one of those people who fakes-it-until-he-makes-it.  He's busy pretending nothing touches him and hoping that he can find a way to make that true.

Here's a snippet from the opening:

This conversation wasn’t going anywhere. Talking wasn’t really where he shone. He knew it.
He reached for her, caught a strand of that gorgeous flame red hair of hers between his fingers. It was still soft as silk and he swore the scent of peaches wafted from it. She sighed.
He leaned in, felt the warmth of her breath as she exhaled. A slight blush covered her creamy skin under the pattern of her freckles and her eyes sort of half-closed.
Kissing her was all he’d been thinking of now that he’d seen his daughter. He had to find a way to convince her to stay with him. Not because of ‘love’ but because they were friends and they had a daughter.
And this was Reba. Marty would have kicked his ass if he’d known how Nicholas had treated her.
Nick wanted her. But then he’d been one big hormone most of his adult life. There was something different about Reba. Always had been. She wasn’t just a curvy body to burn up the sheets with. Especially that night in Colorado. It had been impossible to just think of her as another bed partner.
She licked her lips and he groaned.
He brushed his thumb over her lower lip and she parted them. Everything else seemed to disappear. He didn’t have to think or figure out anything else tonight. Just had to take her in his arms his gut said, then everything would be okay.
He wrapped one arm around her waist and drew her closer to him. He could feel the warmth of her body beneath the thin layers of her nightgown and her robe. She wrapped her arms around his neck as her breasts nestled closer to his chest and he lowered his head. Taking the kiss that he’d wanted since he saw her standing on the balcony.
His redheaded angel.
Sent to him when he needed her most.
He rubbed his lips over hers, teasing her mouth open. He felt the brush of her tongue against his and he stopped thinking. Couldn’t do anything other than suck her tongue deeper into his mouth. God, she tasted good.
Better than he’d remembered.
He was starving for her; he couldn’t get enough of her as he deepened the kiss. Tugging on a strand of her hair, drawing her head closer to him. He cupped the back of her head as he angled his mouth to go deeper. He felt the sting of her nails as she dug them into his shoulders.
She was in his bloodstream. Every part of his body was on high alert. She was more exciting, more dangerous than any bull he’d ever ridden. He wasn’t sure he could hold on for eight seconds with her. He wasn’t sure what he could do, but leaving her wasn’t part of the plan.
He cupped her butt and pulled her more fully into him as he turned and walked backwards to the bed. He sat on the edge, pulled her up on his lap. Her legs parted as she straddled him. He slipped his hand under the hem of her nightgown and felt her cool soft skin as he reached for her butt again.
She shifted, trying to get closer to him and their kisses grew more frantic. He wanted her.
He needed this. Needed Reba tonight. Why had he waited so long to find her? At this moment she seemed the answer to the emptiness that had grown inside of him. The answer to the nebulous what to do next that had been gnawing at him for too long.
She shifted pulling her mouth back from his and sank back on his thighs. She cupped his face and looked deep into his eyes.
He knew she wanted to find something there and he suspected it was emotion. Hell, he cared for her. He wasn’t sure what she wanted to find in his gaze but he wanted her to find it.
She sighed and lowered her gaze from his.
He’d let her down.
“I—”
“Don’t.” She cut him off. “I can’t sleep with you tonight.”
“Why not?” he asked. “I think we both know you want to.”
“Of course, I do. But I’m not some rodeo girl any more, Nicholas. I’m a mom. And I can’t just keep making the same bad choices.”
Bad choices?
“Woman, are you saying I’m a bad choice? I’m your baby’s father,” he said, holding her on his lap when she moved to get off of him.
“I am saying precisely that. Let me go, Nicholas,” she said.
“No.”
“Nicholas.”
“Just say jackass, we both know that’s what you want to do,” he said. “I let you dance away from me once before I’m not doing it again.”
“Liar. You ran away, not me. I’ve been tracking you down since that night.”
Crap.
“I was a mess. I didn’t want you to see me that way.”
She stopped trying to get off his lap and cupped his face in her hands.
She looked down at him with such empathy. “I always see you that way. Since that first summer I met you when I was eighteen and I fell for you. I knew there was more to you than sex and charm. I saw that longing in you to belong to something, and rodeo did that for you. The rodeo bunnies, they were the comfort you needed.”
“You saw all that?” he asked. Because a lot of the time he wasn’t sure there was anything else inside of him.
“Yes. You have always been running from something…I guess it was not knowing your dad, but you know him now, don’t you?”
He shrugged. “Not really. He’s dead.”
“At least you have his name. And you have two new brothers.”
“I do. You’re right. I’m not running any more. I know that things between us aren’t settled but I want you to stay here. Not in town but at the Kelly Ranch. I want you and Martina close to me so we can figure out how best to raise our daughter, Reba.”
“And this,” she said, gesturing to the intimate way he was holding her.
“I want this, too. What do you say? Will you give this worn-out cowboy a second chance?”

Overwhelmed! ~ Anne McAllister

There comes a time when life is supposed to slow down. At least that's what my mother told me.  I guess that's good. At least it would be good right now. But it hasn't happened to me yet.

Last night I was up until two a.m. (well, that would be this morning, not last night, I guess) working on the handout for a genealogical workshop/lecture I'm giving on Saturday.  I would probably have been up Friday night, except the director of the conference needed the handout by this morning.

I was still working out how I was going to talk about "unlocking the US census" for an hour when I could easily talk about it for dozens of hours. Boiling it down is not my strong suit. I needed an angle. And by two a.am. I had an angle, but no handout.

So I got up a 5:30 a.m. (thanks mostly to Mitch, the golden retriever, who doesn't like thunderstorms and heard one coming). I didn't hear it until it got lots closer, but by then he was sitting on my head in bed and panting for all he was worth. So The Prof and I got up and I went back to work on the handout.

It's now finished -- and sent to the director -- all four pages, single spaced -- to go with the five page single-spaced one on using Google for your genealogy that I had done the day before.  And now I'm preparing to go teach a class in beginning genealogy for a friend who is in California visiting her newest grandson.

And then . . . I've got to get going on doing the quarterly taxes which are due Tuesday. And there are the talks I still need to go over for Saturday (you can't put censuses easily on a power point, they are too darn big), so I'm having to work out other alternatives (none of them easy, at least for me).

And the prof and I are intending to go watch an historical re-enactment tomorrow at the town about 25 miles from here where they are illustrating the settlement of the area.  As a lot of Cornish miners settled this area, and I have a lot of them in my family tree, this seems like a good thing to do. Perhaps I should be doing the taxes, but I'm going to try to do the historic re-enactment first.

Oh, and I'm supposed to be writing this blog, which I have, more or less, now.

And then there's my day job -- writing books!  I think it was three days ago that I last wrote anything on the current book. I really need to get back to it. Soon.

But first ....

Do you have days like this?  Got answers?

At least I'm celebrating the near publication of my upcoming Presents/Modern book, The Return of Antonides, which has a dynamite cover on the UK edition.

Looks just like Lukas Antonides, I'm happy to say.

Kandy Shephard: Swimming Holiday

I'm blogging today from the Greek island of Lefkada. I'm on a swimming holiday where we are taken out on a boat to various surrounding islands in the Ionian Sea where we swim a supervised swim in groups.

Can I say I am just a recreational swimmer of middle age and little athletic ability. Yet today I swam 3 kilometres and this afternoon 2 kilometres (with the help of some large swim fins!) it's not something I ever thought I could do and I am very proud of my self.

The water is clean, safe, warm and the most unbelievable colours of turquoise, aqua and deep midnight blue. It's swimmer's heaven!

Have you ever done something you never thought you could do? I'd love to hear your comments!
I'm on very erratic wi fi so might not be able to answer straight away but I'm happy to give away a copy of HIRED BY THE BROODING BILLIONAIRE!

There's something about September...

I don't know what it is about September - it's not as if I've children at home and I've got that whole back to school rush going on. You know how it goes, new shoes, new uniform, new everything...

I've just watched my daughter handle that with her oldest (5), while settling the middle one (3) into pre-school and coping with the littlest who's just discovered that he get where ever he wants to be the minute her back is turned.

September should be a time when I can ease off a little in the garden as the grass slows down, enjoy those last warm days that always seem to arrive the minute the children are back in school. It is absolutely lovely here in Wiltshire at the moment.

But...

Two more appointments have just gone into my September diary. The eye clinic (an appointment 40 odd miles away at 9 am is really not fun). There are two meetings at the U3A (University of Third Age) this month and I'm on flower duty at the WI. I've just booked in to have a manicure and pedicure before heading off to London for the annual Mills and Boon Author Lunch. And of course there's the hairdresser for a trim, ditto. I'm starting an Italian class and I'm hoping to get a place in the pilates class, too and there's an evening of fun in Southwick Village Hall with another group.

Most of it - apart from the eye clinic - is fun. But there's this other thing going on. The book deadline is looming. I told my editor that I was going to have it on her desk by the end of September

I'm stocking up on the chocolate...

Addison Fox: Summer's Close

With the Labor Day holiday upon us, summer in the US effectively comes to end. Of course, the real end of summer doesn’t arrive for a few more weeks, but the “fun” part of summer – the long, lazy days and the pursuit of more light-hearted endeavors – is coming to an end.

While I always look forward to summer, I love that we end the season with a day devoted to taking time off. Acknowledging our labors and taking a day away (or a long weekend!) away from them.

For me, reading often fulfills that time away from work. I love sinking into a good book and simply getting lost in a story. For a few hours, I don’t have day job demands, writing deadlines, house cleaning, outside commitments or appointments. Nope, it’s just me and a story, falling in love with a new hero, flying through space with a crew of characters or solving a fresh crime through my hardened cop’s eyes.

So what about you? What do you have on the agenda for Labor Day and what are you looking forward to in the coming months from your TBR pile. As you read, I encourage you to think about what a nice escape you’re taking from the day to day.

Thanks for joining me today!
XOXO,
Addison

Despite early ambitions of being a diver, a drummer or a doctor, Addison Fox happily discovered she was more suited to life as a writer. She lives in Dallas and - thankfully - doesn't have to operate on anyone. You can find her at her home on the web at www.addisonfox.com. Her latest book, THE PROFESSIONAL, will be out in October from Harlequin Romantic Suspense. You can visit her at her website at www.addisonfox.com

Lucy Monroe: September's Super Series from Awesome Authors

On August 20th, my End of Summer bash hosted over 300 readers, who got to chat with some favorite authors about their newest installations to their book series.  I thought it would be fun to share a few moments from the event and tell you about them and their new books!  For our guests, there was a chance to talk with and learn about authors who were new to them, play some trivia and win some fun prizes!

I had the privilege of participating in a box set with Sabrina York, Her Royal Hotness, who is an absolute gem to work with. At the party, she provided humor, downloads, and even a tiara giveaway!  #3 in her STONE HARD SEALS series, GUARD DOG was on tap for us.  Mason Steele was a lifelong Navy Seal until an injury musters him out.  He becomes a reluctant bodyguard for the spoiled, sassy Pansy Hightower, who doesn't want to be babysat.  When it becomes clear that she is in danger, she comes to depend on his protection.  A hot kiss leads both of them to realize their scorching passion, even if it means disaster for them both.

"From the beginning to end, Ms. York combines the perfect elements; humor, action, suspense, love and new found friendship to make this a novella worth reading. Did I mention the cutest Chihuahua (”guard dog” with a bacon addiction) on the face of the planet? This is a must read!!" Pam TN, amazon reader review

My dear friend Danica Favorite shared stories and pictures of her lovely home in Colorado while at the fete. THE LAWMAN'S REDEMPTION is her second historical novel; it is the tale of a lawman trying to redeem his reputation by finding the outlaw who framed him.  The only person with information on the bandit is Mary Stone, whose own history makes her fear that she will land in jail, leaving her siblings alone.  Will wants to clear his name, but will it be at the expense of the woman he is coming to love?

"I've never wanted to throttle and hug a heroine more! Mary, Mary, quite contrary -- that's what I'm calling her. I was on the edge of my seat, barely daring to breathe, mentally urging her to trust Will and just tell him her secret." -Kav, goodreads reader review.

Rachel Grant is the author of COVERT EVIDENCE, book #5 in her EVIDENCE series.  I first met Rachel while working on a charity box set as well.  During her visit, Rachel told us a bit about her archaeology career and the adventures that her husband is having as well!  In her dream job, deep in the heart of Turkey archaeologist Cressida Porter finds herself the unwitting courier for a terrorist network. Case Officer Ian Boyd is assigned to intercept and identify the terrorist leader. But spending time with Cressida awakens a longing in him for stability. Distrust of Ian intensifies for Cressida when she discovers that what she knows about Ian is all false. Can she trust Ian with her life; will Ian choose Cressida or his mission?

"This is an excellent romantic suspense with the emphasis on the action and suspense. Each book of this series begin with a tipping point in the main character’s life, though each is different. This may be my favorite beginning because from when the first punch is thrown, I was hooked. I like to refer to these books as romance for the intelligent reader. Again, I can highly recommend Covert Evidence and all of the books in Rachel Grant’s Evidence Series"-pw reader, Net Galley reviewer

MELTING ICE is the latest work in the GAME ON IN SEATTLE series by my dear friend Jami Davenport.  Isaac Wolfe has burned every bridge in his hockey career, leading him to the Seattle Sockeyes halfway through their first season.  Emotionally guarded, when he meets Avery Maxwell she makes him feel, which he has avoided for so long.  Avery is trying to establish her own life as a horse trainer when she meets the darkly sexy Isaac.  As love begins to grow between them, their lives are complicated by their respective career paths.  Is it passion or career, or can they have it all?

"Jami Davenport has done a phenomenal job with this book and the characters. I loved how complex both Isaac and Avery were and I found myself rooting for them from the get go... I would highly recommend this book without a doubt!" -Heather, amazon.com reader reviewer

Monica Burns is the sister of my soul in many ways.  In her time with us at the party, she delighted us with spicy snippets and magnificent men.  Her newest book in the RECKLESS ROCKWOOD series is the HIGHLANDER'S WOMAN, and it has all the spiciness we love from Monica.  In an accident, Patience has become physically scarred, and has taken to being a recluse, away from the husband she refuses to be a burden to.  It is only when Julian's sight is lost that she returns home, only to find him questioning the sincerity of her love.  Patience must find a way to convince Julian of her love, even by way of seduction.

"I couldn't be more engrossed in it, the drama, tragedies, romance, forgiveness and the passion. It was all so beautifully written." — Etiosa, Goodreads

One of my mentors visited the fiesta as well.  Adrianne Lee is something of a hero of mine.  Her books have a wide range, and may contain romance, intrigue or perhaps recipes!  She shared the story of her 7 year quest to be published!  Her newest book, A WEDDING TO DIE FOR is the first in the WEDDINGVILLE series.  Meg and Peter have come to the quirky town of Weddingville to be married.  As the maid of honor, Daryl Anne must keep the bride calm, no matter what. But last time she checked, "what" didn't include the bride's estranged mother turning up, scandalizing the locals - and getting murdered. Nor did it include digging for clues with Seth, while trying to remember exactly why she left him behind. It's quite a juggling act, even for a seasoned multi-tasker like Daryl Anne. She soon attracts lusty glances from Seth-and the attention of a killer who's determined to take this town out of business . . .

"I've read many books by this author, and while I liked them all, it is when Ms. Lee writes in the first person that she shines. Daryl Anne is the bride's best friend and narrates this story. Perfect for her role as maid of honor, she is witty, worried, fretful, funny. When she takes on the role of detective, she becomes suspicious, inventive, and for some, a pain in the you know what. This whodunit story moves along quickly with twists and turns, likable characters (and a few not so likable as a good mystery should have) and a surprise ending. One of her best. I'm looking forward to reading book two." Carmine, amazon reader review.

I so enjoyed spending time with these fun, smart authors, and am so blessed to work alongside them in my writing.  As for me, the first in my NORTHERN FIRES series is WILD HEAT.  In the quaint little town of Cailkirn, Alaska, it’s impossible to keep a secret, especially one as juicy as the unexpected return of Kitty Grant. Tack MacKinnon remembers her wild red curls and even wilder spirit-and still feels the sting from when she shattered his heart in college. But there’s a pain in Kitty’s gorgeous eyes that guts him to the core and Tack is determined to do whatever it takes to see the woman he still loves smile again-even if it means taking on her demons as his own.

After fleeing an abusive ex-husband, Kitty decides that the best way to heal her broken heart is to come back home. But she gets a whole new shock when she sees how undeniably sexy Tack has become. More handsome, more muscular, more charming-more everything-he’s impossible to resist. Before she knows it, they’re reigniting sparks that could set the whole state of Alaska on fire. Yet trust doesn’t come easy to Kitty anymore, and as things heat up between her and Tack, she can’t help but wonder if one of them is going to get burned…

Childhood BFFs Still Rock After 20 Years

Before there were acronyms, like BFF, we all probably have had a best friend in our early days of the school experience. i was lucky to have such a friend, Gayatri, when we attended the same elementary school in Guyana. It might have been possible that our parents' friendship fostered our friendship, since I would go to visit, alongside my parents.

And so we were inseparable, taking photos, playing games, going on trips with her family. We never imagined that we would be pulled apart by my parents' decision to live in America. With promises that we would write (remember this is before the Internet), our friendship was tested by the long distance.

By the time I returned to Guyana, we were young adults with significant others. She'd married her Englishman, I'd married my American dude. Under the tropical sun, we caught up with each other's life, enjoying how far we'd come as young girls with large dreams.

Then Gayatri moved to England. On a trip to attend a wedding, I also headed to England. By then, she had her first child and I got to hang out with her for a few days in Cambridge. Now, we were on the roller coaster ride of life where she followed her husband's work assignments off the beaten track for tourists. I had my two children, worked, and pretty much stayed on this side of the hemisphere.

Twenty years later, Gayatri was back in England after her husband's final overseas assignment.  Once again, with perfect timing, I was heading to London, and this time, with my daughter. We had a great visit and shared a tasty meal at Dijoom restaurant featuring Bombay cuisine (I took a photo with our waitress).

Now we have Facebook to be the bridge between our visits. It was great seeing her and reminiscing about our childhood. I don't know what tomorrow will bring, but here's to a BFF who was more like a sister in my childhood.

Call, send a note, or text your BFF. Let them know that they are on your mind. If you'll be seeing them soon, give them a big hug. BFFs rock!

Rachael Johns: So… who exactly are THE DEACONS OF BOURBON STREET?

In May 2014, I went to the Romantic Times conference and roomed with two of my favourite writing people – Megan Crane and Maisey Yates. It was my first ever US convention/conference and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. In fact, it was my first ever time to America at ALL and it just happened to be in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Aside from the fact there were some amazing sweet things called beignets there that I HAD to try, I didn’t have any idea of what RT or New Orleans would have in store for me.  But making the decision to go turned out to be one of the best things I’ve ever done.

If I hadn’t gone to RT in New Orleans and hadn’t roomed with the fabulous Megan and Maisey, I wouldn’t be one of the Deacons of Bourbon Street bitches? You see, wandering around the French Quarter, the three of us fell totally in love. Not with each other (of whom we are already enamored enough) but with everything that encapsulates the place! We couldn’t take enough photos, visit enough boutiques and galleries, eat in enough restaurants, people watch for long enough. Everything from the history to the buildings to the quirky residents that currently inhabit the French Quarter captured our imaginations and we knew we HAD to write books set there.

I think we all imagined we’d go home and come up with our own single title stories that somehow included New Orleans, but then one editor mentioned to Maisey that since we got along so well and obviously LOVED the place, maybe we should write a co-authored series set there. We jumped on that idea straight away and somewhere during our brainstorming we decided it would be fun to write about an outlaw motorcycle gang. Now, the others will tell you that this was MY idea but I adamantly deny that. Needless to say, we decided we couldn’t write a biker series without our other friend Jackie Ashenden (http://www.jackieashenden.com) who had already written a biker dude and without a doubt wrote far hotter and far grittier than any of us.

Of course, Jackie said ‘Yay, I’d love to be involved,’ and we went from there. We brainstormed an overarching mystery plot and a red-hot sexy biker hero for each of us. I think the wonderful thing about a multi-author series is that we all bring our unique ideas and voices to the series. Although we each wrote one book, there was a lot of discussion about the characters and plot before and during the writing.

Each book has a different flavor – reflective of the writer and the different heroes and heroines. Megan Crane has this theory that we are each our biker heroes but you’ll have to read the books to see what she means.

Which, speaking of are:

2)     Fire Me Up by Rachael Johns (http://amzn.com/B00R04OX0W)
3)     Hold Me Down by Jackie Ashenden  (http://amzn.com/B00S3RK7NC)
4)     Strip You Bare by Maisey Yates (http://amzn.com/B00TCI48XG)

Just a few weeks ago, we were lucky enough to meet up again, re-live our memories of the French Quarter, have dinner with our lovely editor (see picture below) and discuss the possibility of writing another series together!
