Exotic or Familiar? - Susanna Carr

I just read WIFE FOR A WEEK by Kelly Hunter. This Promotional Presents was a very fun read. One of the pleasant surprises about this book is that it was set in Hong Kong.

I don't think I've read a romance set in Hong Kong before, which is kind of shocking since a lot of romances promise exotic locales. Well, exotic for me. One of my life goals is to visit London, which sounds very cosmopolitan, dynamic, and unlike anything I've ever experienced. I've read so many romances set in London and I want to see it first hand.

But I think my favorite settings when it comes to romance are the sun-drenched islands. I live in the Pacific Northwest where it's usually cloudy and cold. Reading about these tropical paradises is a great way to escape the constant drizzling rain.

Yet there are times when I'm homesick for the Midwestern farm towns of my youth and I purposely look for a book that will remind me of those days. The familiarity of small town living comforts me, no matter how it looks outside my window. I'm so glad that romance publishers offer such an array of locales, so I can find exactly what I need depending on my mood.

Which setting do you usually prefer? The exotic or the familiar?

I enjoy all different types of settings from small towns to large cities.

Hi Susanna,

How are you doing? I hope great! I mainly prefer a warm exotic setting. Although, the familiar hometown setting makes me feel all comfy and cozy. Mmmm.....like warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream!

I'm glad you enjoyed Wife for a Week, Susanna. I thoroughly enjoy setting stories in SE Asia. Have lived and travelled there lots so it feels like my backyard.

These days I'm a farm girl (okay, elderly farm girl - farming woman with sensible shoes) in rural Australia - with cows, chooks, and fruit trees at the ready. Maybe that's WHY I like to set my stories someplace urban, exotic, and glam...

Hi,

I usually enjoy exotic destinations because it is quite new to me and it is great way to better indulge yourself in a fantasy

I live in the North East and the weather is - most of the time - horrible. So when a story takes me on an exotic island, I welcome the escape!

Yeah, okay, I'm not someone who likes change or whatever, so yep, I like the familiar and tried and true. LOL But at the same time, that isn't all the time, so even I like different and exotic once in a while! :)

For me reading is an descape so I prefer exotic locations but I also enjoy small town reads occasionally as well. Those are comfort reads.

I tend to prefer the familiar but when I really need to escape, send me to the exotic! But since I don't travel a lot, any location I read about is exotic.

If the story is a contemporary read, I love to read about the familiar. If it's a sci-fi, exotic places are my cup of tea. I like authors to let themselves loose with sci-fis.

I like both Exotic & Familiar. I always like a change in my reading after a while.
