Liz Fielding: What I'm reading this month...

It's December, definitely time to read all those brilliant Christmas romances on the shelves and I confess I'm a bit ahead of myself here so I'm sharing my best so far.

First up is the last of Sarah Morgan's Puffin Island trilogy - Christmas Ever After. It's time for Skylar to dump the horrible bloke she'd been stuck with in the last two books and find True Love. It has to be said that Alex would not have been her first choice. He wouldn't even have been on the list, but if you've been reading this fabulous trilogy you'll know that they've been sniping at one another for months and that's only ever going to end in one place. Totally delicious!

Another fabulous read is Jane Porter's Christmas at Copper Moiuntain, one of the Montana Born Christmas boxset stories. A grouchy widower, a woman whose heart is in bits and two kids who need a cuddle really badly. I took my Kindle to bed for an early night and read this from beginning to end. And when I'd finished I had to turn my pillow over because is was soaking wet with tears. Just the loveliest Christmas story. And I still have all those others to go!

And still waiting on my Kindle I have Donna Alward's Christmas at Evergreen Inn - the last in her Jewell Cove series. Can't wait to get into that.

And The Runaway Christmas Bride by Scarlet Wilson
Finally, I've just downloaded Hot Christmas Nights - a Lovecats Down Under box set including books by Michelle Douglas, Louisa George and Kandy Shepherd (who I had the joy of sitting next to at an author lunch back in September).

Last and very much not least, since this is my post of the year I want to wish you all (in no particular order) readers, writers, bloggers, reviewers, the very happiest Christmas you can imagine and a New Year filled with peace and joy.

Christmas Spirit Sampler

Shhh. I know it's a bit early to talk about Christmas, but look. This is the most amazing deal!

I'll admit I have started thinking about Christmas. Usually I put it off until after Halloween at the very least. Heck, I'll procrastinate as long as possible, but my daughter lives away now. We had to start thinking about what it would look like so she could ask for time off work.

Not that we're planning anything exciting. I love the idea of spending Christmas somewhere tropical, but we usually stay home and do low-key things like play games and go for walks. I grabbed these photos from last year:

You could be forgiven for thinking this is Monopoly, but it's actually a game called The Gambler. As far as I recall, you don't have to know when to hold 'em or when to fold 'em.

My daughter loves Family Game Night and forces it upon us whenever we're together. We always have fun, which is why we succumb to the pressure. Pictionary is a big favourite, but sometimes we mix it up with something like Boggle, or, in this case, something we don't even remember how to play.

I'm a big walker, so that's always my choice if given the option. This is about a five minute drive from our house:

Yeah, we pretty much live in paradise.

Then, of course, there is turkey dinner. But on that topic... last winter I was organizing some paperwork with Canadian Customs so I could bring swag in from the US and avoid the duty. I went to visit their office, which is about five minutes beyond this gorgeous view, and when I came out of the building, these creatures rushed me.

I'm not afraid of birds, especially not dumb ones like wild turkeys, but when they all came running at me, it was fairly startling. I realized after the fact that someone must be feeding them, but for one second I had that panicked thought that I wouldn't make it to my car before they 'got' me. Of course, my second thought was, "Free. But looks like tough eating." Ha! As if I could pluck a bird myself, let alone 'get' one.

What does your typical Christmas look like? Are you ready to start thinking about the holidays? If you need a dose of spirit, I highly recommend this collection. Pre-order now and it will automagically deliver to your reader on the 20th. (Four short days away!) You'll be able to read one a week all the way into December. Preorder here:

C. J.’s Summer Reading List

Salutations and Happy Independence Day to my American readers and friends. I’m going to be spending the fourth at our cottage in Montana with my daughter Tessa and her friend Ella. I wish we could look forward to some fireworks over Flathead Lake but conditions have been so dry lately, that those sorts of celebrations are being discouraged.

The good news is...we can still read! In the hot summer months one of my favorite indulgences is to dive into a fast paced book and just keep reading until it’s done. With July off to a good start, I thought it would be fun to share the top three books on this year’s summer reading list.

For Reading When It’s Just Too Hot To Move:

The Silent Girls by Eric Rickstad

The chills in this book will keep you from overheating on those very hot summer days. I am about two thirds in and can’t wait to finish! It’s a very captivating mystery with some pretty cool characters. The gun-toting, venison-eating hero captures your heart when you learn he raised his niece as his own after his sister’s murder.

For Reading On A Rainy Summer Morning:

It’s You by Jane Porter

Don’t let rain clouds dampen your day. Just make a cup of tea, crawl under your quilt, and snuggle down for a read that will touch your heart and make you think about who really are the ‘good guys’ and the ‘bad guys’ in this world. I gulped this one down in just three days!

For Reading In Your Beach Chair:

A Week At The Lake by Wendy Wax

I don’t have my copy of this one yet, but I love the cover and I’m a fan of Wendy Wax, so I don’t see how I can go wrong. When I’m done here I may go pick another title from Tule Publishing. They have so many excellent books out this summer with the most delicious-looking covers!

Tell me—what will you be reading this summer? I need some more books to add to my list and I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Hope you enjoy your summer!

Lilian Darcy: Great Holiday Reads

I’m writing this while most Americans are sitting down to their Thanksgiving dinner. We had ours last night. Yes, we live in Australia where Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated, but my husband is American, so we do celebrate it in our family.

We had a big, golden, crispy-skinned turkey, and lots of baked vegetables – potatoes, pumpkin, parsnips, carrots, asparagus – and then for dessert there was pumpkin pie accompanied by a friend’s to-die-for home-made ice-cream.

We all sat around the table, and the kids are at an age now where they’ll do that. They’re happy to relax and chat instead of scooting off as soon as they’re done eating, the way they used to.

So I’m thinking about holidays. And I realize I don’t often use those big, festive holidays as themes in my books. I don’t think I’ve ever written a Christmas story. Which is weird because I do love all those big celebrations.

I do want to alert you to some great holiday reads that others have written, however.

Top of the list would have to be Jane Porter’s The Kidnapped Christmas Bride. Yes, it is every bit as fast-paced and sizzling and dramatic as it sounds, and yes, the cover matches the mood perfectly. As well as the drama, there is layer upon layer of real emotion, and celebration, and family, and change, and a love between two people that’s survived more than its share of challenge. You will read this one in a single sitting, while not even hearing your family talking to you.

A close second is Megan Crane’s Come Home For Christmas, Cowboy. The passion and emotion in Megan’s stories is so intense, you feel as if you’re living inside her characters and you don’t want to come back out again. It’s like jumping into a chalk pavement picture in Mary Poppins, only adult-themed. Dare and Christina belong together but they’ve lost their way, and it takes her strong stance and a big, warm family Christmas to help them find each other again. I loved this story.

My third recommendation is actually four stories, all centered around the theme of Christmas in New York. Four friends who’ve grown up almost like sisters, four stories of second chances and lost and found love. Each story is very different and can be read alone, yet together they create such a vivid picture of the diversity and magic of Christmas in one of the world’s best cities. It’s a magical series altogether. The individual stories are This Christmas by Jeannie Moon, All I Want For Christmas by Jennifer Gracen, A Light in the Window by Jolyse Barnett, and Goodness and Light by Patty Blount.

Finally, if you’re ready to skip past Christmas and on to Valentine’s Day and chocolate fantasies, my own women’s fiction novel The Sweetest Thing is free on most major ebook sites. I hope you’ll like it.

CJ Carmichael: The joys of summer

August already—someone please stop winding that clock! Summer is special in Canada and Montana (the two places where I spend most of my time). Since we have such a long, cold winter, we cherish these long, warm days. Work slows down as we focus on enjoying the great outdoors, our friends, and our favorite outdoor activities.

This month I’ve had the pleasure of hosting four of my favorite writing friends at our Montana Cottage. From left to right we have: Megan Crane, Jane Porter, Lilian Darcy and Kelly Hunter. We took this time to unwind from the Romance Writers of American conference, and also to plan the stories we want to write in the coming year. The best talks and visits were held here on the dock, or on the deck off the house.

I also include reading as a favorite outdoor activity when it’s summer. What can be better than sipping a cool drink and enjoying a good book while you relax on your favorite lounge chair or hammock? Well, maybe if the book was free? And you had a man servant preparing you iced beverages of your choice?

Afraid I can’t offer you that man servant, but I do have a free book. J

Family Matters is a trilogy of stories about women and their children…and the men who love them. In the first story, for the sake of her child a single mother must face the father who disowned her, the ex-boyfriend who hurt her and the neighbor she’s always loved as she finds A Daughter’s Place. And you can download this book right now…for FREE. It’s available on Kindle, Nook, iBook and Kobo.

Get Your Free Download Here:
May I suggest a delicious huckleberry smoothie to go with your book? Just blend ½ cup coconut water, ½ cup frozen or fresh huckleberries, ½ banana along with some ice cubes. Yum!

Enjoy August friends…Free Time & Free Reads!

Kelly Hunter: Tule Publishing Group launches Holiday imprint!

From the publishing group that gave us Montana Born Books and Southern Born Books comes a new imprint aimed at delivering a fun, smart, playful mix of women’s fiction, chick lit, and contemporary romance - perfect for beach reads and a feel-good escape by authors you've loved for years.

Holiday launched with the first ever eBook release of Jane Porter’s charming chick lit debut, The Frog Prince. Print copies are also available again for the first time in years.

Once upon a time, a lovely maiden from Fresno married the man of her dreams. After the honeymoon, she waited for the “happily ever after” part…until her Prince Charming turned into a toad.

Now Holly Bishop is about to write a new chapter in her life. She moves to San Francisco to become an event planner-only to find she is dealing with a gorgeous fairy godmother for a boss and corporate witches wicked enough to sabotage her future. Not to mention the egomaniacal frogs Holly finds lurking at the bottom of the dating pool. With no one to save her, will Holly slay the dragons herself and stand on her own for the very first time? Will the man behind the mask at her costume ball make her believe in love again? And will she risk giving up her dreams to become the heroine of her own story?

Today we're celebrating our newest release, , Megan Crane’s gorgeously quirky time travel romance, I Love The 80s

Jenna Jenkins was getting married to her long-term boyfriend, Adam, and she was sure her life was all coming together. Until Adam left her for a twenty-three-year-old yoga instructor. To ease the pain, Jenna threw herself into her teenage memories of the late, great Tommy Seer, killed when his car crashed off a bridge in 1987, when she was just twelve, and focusing on the man who has been - and always will be - the true love of her life, however worrying that may seem to her best friend, Aimee.

One day, working late, or thinking about Tommy at her office after dark, a freak accident sends Jenna back to 1987. It's a few short months before Tommy will die and Jenna's job is apparently working as his assistant. But Tommy is not the guy she imagined. He's mean and rude and obnoxious. But he is still deliciously good-looking. When Tommy takes her into his confidence, she starts to see the real him beneath the image and finds herself more in love than ever. He suspects someone is trying to kill him - and she knows it won't be long before they succeed. Why is she here? Is she meant to save his life? But how can she without revealing the bizarre, unbelievable truth?

Jane Porter: When Writers Rule The World

Most readers know me as a writer.  Many writers know me as a writer and a speaker.  I have spent as much time on the road speaking to RWA chapters and at writers’ conferences as I have promoting my books.  I was just in Spokane, WA this past weekend doing a workshop on emotion for RWA’s Inland Empire Chapter and when I’m teaching, I’m really passionate about sharing what I know as a writer, and how to improve a book, taking a good story from good to great.  Every book can be made better.  I’m constantly pushing myself to write a better book.  Every new book is an opportunity to grow, and further delight my readers.

I write for myself because I’m driven to write, but after 44 books, the outcome isn’t for me, or about me, it’s about my readers.  Satisfying those readers.  Wanting to entertain and engage those readers so that my readers truly escape, becoming immersed in my world, and the story I’m telling.  To do that, a story has to be compelling, and believable, and fresh.

You can see I have a lot of opinions when it comes to writing, books, and delivering a fantastic story for one’s readers.  I have so many opinions, as a matter of fact, that I have to be careful not to alienate other writers with my beliefs.  We writers are all different.  We are driven by different goals and needs, but my goal is to write the biggest, juiciest, bestselling commercial fiction novel I can write.  How I do that, is up to me.  I have my own skill set, so I have to work my skill set.  Part of that is knowing why my readers read me, and what they want when they read a Jane Porter novel, and then working hard to ensure that my published novel doesn’t just met their expectations—but wildly--exceeds them.

Now I’ve taken all my opinions and my hard work and started a publishing company named Tule Publishing, with our registered LLC being The Tule Group.  Two years ago I would never have done this.  Even a year ago, I wouldn’t have.  But a lot changed for me in the past year.  I had health stuff that meant I couldn’t pound out book after book...how could I?  My hands wouldn’t type.  Then there were continuing changes in the publishing industry, which influenced my choices, as did the continuing disappearance of brick and mortar bookstores.  I have never wanted to be a publisher or editor, and yet, suddenly I am both.   But it works.  It suits me.  I am, if nothing else, hardworking and opinionated.

Tule Publishing has one goal---to publish fantastic stories, by the best writers, to delight the reader, while satisfying the writer's desire for creativity, freedom, and commercial success.

Tule is about the writer making money, having fun in the process, and working with awesome women – fellow writers – and Tule's small e-publishing team.  We are a small full-service publishing company, deliberately small to be agile and able to adapt quickly.  We are launching all of our releases in 2013 and 2014 first as e-books, and then choosing select titles to put into print.

Because I’m an author that’s written for three different publishers, I know what I’ve wanted from a publisher, and what I didn’t, and am trying to focus Tule’s energy to give authors the support they need so they can continue to write.  At Tule, the power structure is inverted.  Here, the authors are the talent.  The authors have power.  The contracts favor the author, and editorial isn’t about saying the author is wrong, but building the author’s voice and skill set so that she can shine as a single title author, and a future star, if she isn’t one already.

As a writer I don’t believe in boxes and categories.  I’ve written category fiction for 13 years but I approached every one of those 30+ stories as if it was a single title.  I believe in huge world building even if it’s a novella.  More story, not less.  Bigger voice.  Bigger risks.  Bigger writing.  My motto is “go big, or go home.”  But it’s worked for me, and it’s my mantra for Tule.

Any author writing for Tule is also writing for demanding readers like me.

Between now and Christmas, we will have 8 stories released with our first imprint, Montana Born (montanabornbooks.com), which include 7 novellas and a free story, and then we have 24 more titles scheduled for 2014.

Why launch Tule with the Montana Born imprint?  Montana is mythic.  Montana is about possibility and dreams and big sky...but also it’s filled with hard-working, rugged, independent people—which make it perfect for our first imprint.

And then there is our first story, of our first imprint.  Who better to launch with, then the incomparable Megan Crane?  Megan’s Tempt Me, Cowboy, went on sale last week, and then on Tuesday, September 24th we release 5-time Rita nominee, Lilian Darcys Marry Me, Cowboy, followed by the October release of CJ Carmichael’s Promise, Me, Cowboy and my Take Me, Cowboy at the end of the month.

Montana Born isn’t our only imprint.  In June Tule launches its second imprint, Holiday, and we have a third imprint already scheduling stories.  Editors are in place with every imprint, along with copy editors, cover art designers, and full marketing and publicity teams, too.

I don’t know where this adventure will go.  I just know I had to do it.  I’ve poured my heart and soul into writing books my readers will love, and it’s time for more readers, not less.  It’s time for more respect, more freedom, more flexibility, and more joy.

We who write do something extraordinary.  We should be validated and supported at every level—emotionally, psychologically, and financially.

Last February I said these very things to Megan, Lilian and CJ, who all quickly became Tule’s founding authors.

I love what we are doing at Tule.  Writing great books is important.  What we do as writers matter.  I know I wouldn’t be happy without my comfort reads, and the world is full of people like me, who love to get lost in a great story.

So here we are, with a publishing company devoted to readers and writers and not interested (well, hardly...barely) in its own ego.  Yes, Tule has to make money to pay staff and bills.  But Tule won’t make money unless the authors make good money, and in this author’s mind, that’s how it should be.

I always said one-day writers would rule the world.  I said it smiling, tongue in cheek. But maybe, one day, it might be true.  Leave a comment for a chance to win a $15 Amazon gift card!

Christmas Presents with Anna Campbell

Sometimes a Harlequin Presents is all that will fit the bill when it comes to what I want to read!

I was hoping for a reading binge over the Christmas break. Didn't quite happen, sadly. Real life got in the way. But I did manage a few days ago to snatch a day and a half where I read nothing but Harlequin Presents! Ah, what bliss! Those crazy titles! Those high stakes plots! All that operatic emotion! Just what I felt like.

I started with an author whose work I hadn't read before. Sarah Morgan's The Brazilian Boss's Innocent Mistress (see what I mean about those crazy titles? Sheesh!). Really great story about a woman unjustly accused of embezzlement and the growling alpha male who decides to make her pay for her 'crimes'. Grooviest element? Probably the hero's glass mansion in the middle of the Brazilian rainforest. Seriously cool! Almost James Bondish. Will definitely read Sarah Morgan again. This was great.

Then a great Lynne Graham. I've long been a fan of this writer - her Prisoner of Passion is one of my all-time favorites. This one was called The Petrakos Bride. It had all those elements I look for in a Lynne Graham - an overbearing hero who finds himself flummoxed when he falls in love, a match of opposites who somehow find common ground, great sexual tension. A lovely Cinderella story just right for a post-Christmas romance binge.

Then a feast of two wonderful Jane Porters. I love Jane's work - she manages to pack more emotion into a 50,000 word book than most writers manage over a 10-volume series. These two were no exception. There was The Latin Lover's Secret Child and Hollywood Husband, Contract Wife. Both cut right to the heart and were beautifully written with such passion (and I don't just mean the passion in the bedroom, although there's certainly plenty of that!).

My binge ended with a debut book by Jennie Lucas called The Greek Billionaire's Baby Revenge. Another classic presents although with some unusual elements that added a piquant edge to my feast. Russian gangsters and Las Vegas entrepreneurs, how fantastic! And again lots of passion.

So thank you, Presents authors. You gave me just what I wanted in spades.

Do you ever find yourself in need of a fix of Harlequin Presents? Are there any authors you turn to at such times? What appeals to you about Harlequin Presents?

Jane Porter's Title Contest

I got the bad news today. Alpha Mom, out in only 6 months, will no longer be called Alpha Mom due to someone apparently owning the title. It seems a clever woman has copyrighted the words (who would have thought?!?) and is threatening to sue me and my publisher if we don’t change the name of my novel. I’m a fan of women who accomplish things but not a fan of women who threaten legal action so Alpha Mom needs a new title. Fast.

I’m asking all my readers, fellow writers and friends to help brainstorm new title ideas I can send my editor this week. To get a sneak peek of the Alpha Mom cover (before the title change) visit my B-Board for the next few days and see what the cover looks like, and read the blurb about the book, before the cover and blurb disappear to be unveiled once the transformation is complete.

My editor has suggested three possible new titles:

Queen Bee
Alpha Female
Power Mom

Do you like any of them? Can you think of any other ideas? Want to send me some ideas?
If you suggest a title that gets picked by my editorial team at 5 Spot for the book, which is Taylor’s book (we meet her in Odd Mom Out) you’ll be rewarded with a $50 Sephora gift certificate, an advanced reading copy of To-Be-Retitled-Alpha-Mom, and a signed set of my 5 Spot books: The Frog Prince, Flirting with Forty, and Odd Mom Out.

So, if you’re creative and like brainstorming book titles send me your suggestions as I desperately need your help. Alpha Mom needs a new name right away.
