My Page in Woman's World

by Joanne Rock

I'm excited to have a story in Woman's World magazine this week! If you're out grocery shopping, look for my short Super Bowl-themed piece called "A Tailgate Romance" in the February 3rd issue.

The story is set in Mesa Falls, the fictional town in western Montana where my current Harlequin Desire miniseries is set. I gave the heroine, Lexi Grayson, a reunion romance with a cowboy who left the ranch.

It was fun for me to write a football-themed story. Readers who've been with me for awhile might remember that my first miniseries for Harlequin Desire, Bayou Billionaires with my friend Catherine Mann, was set in the world of pro football. My titles were His Secretary's Surprise Fiance and Secret Baby Scandal. The hero of the former was a coach. The hero of the latter, a quarterback.

But then, I love sports romances. I've done hockey heroes and baseball players too. My current miniseries for Tule, Texas Playmakers, features baseball-playing brothers. Perfect Catch and Game On will be followed up by Scoring Position, due out in May 2020.

But one of the most interesting facts about this month's story in Woman's World? You may be interested to know it's not my first time in the magazine. Long ago, I appeared in the pages of the publication modeling back-to-school fashions! My guess is it ran sometime in August of 1985 or 1986. That'll tell you how long it's been since I looked like someone getting ready to go back to school. I wish I had the picture to share with you, but like so much of my life right now, it's packed in boxes as I'm between houses. One of these days, when I'm reunited with all my things, I'll post a pic.

For now, however, I'm far more proud of having my words on the magazine pages! Please do keep an eye out for the story, and for my February 2020 Harlequin Desire release, Rule Breaker.

***So if you're at the grocery store you can look for the magazine... I'm curious what are you most likely to forget to buy at the grocery store? Or what shopping oversight is most apt to send you right back out to get it? For me, it's coffee creamer. I can't cope without the kind I like! I'll give one random commenter an advance copy of my March Mesa Falls book, Heartbreaker!

I more like to leave the grocery list on the front of the frig and then not remember half of it when I am in the store. I dont have anything that would send me right back into the store for unless you consider allergy medicine. Living in the south we have all 4 season and fall and spring are the worst for my allergies.

I try to have a list--on paper--but occasionally, I'll forget to add something or decide to buy something which needs a companion and mentally add it to the list. Perhaps, the youngest wants hot dogs. I'll buy the hot dogs and forget the rolls. Buy the ingredients for fajitas and forget the sour cream. The little things, but they mean so much.

I bet you were a great model!

As you get older, like me, you make list. When something is the last of whatever it is, then it goes on the list. Then before going to the store, I look at the menu hubby and I came up for the next few days and see if I'm lacking an item. With all that, you would think that I'd come home with what I went after. Unfortunately that doesn't always happen. While hubby drinks coffee and tea, I am a 100% Diet Pepsi drinking - morning, noon night, meal time and in between meals. One would think I'd have it on top of the list and be first to get into the buggy, but on more than one occasion I've had to go back to get it because I forgot. I think it's because I'm trying to remember what everyone else wants or at least that's the excuse I use. :)
Thank you for the fabulous opportunity to win an ARC of "Heartbreaker"! I would be thrilled to read and review if fortunate enough to be chosen.

I forget to move the writing from the dry-erase fridge board to my printed list and often phone my husband for him to read me what's on the list.
Yes, lists are a GOOD thing.

Here's what happens to me. I write a list, I remind myself to pick up a particular item and I do. But then the next time I shop, I look at my list and say "Did I forget to put such and such on the list?" and I pick it up again. I've had 6 jars of mayo in my pantry at one time, 4 bottles of maple syrup, 5 spaghetti sauce...you get the drift.

Lorena, I'm not good at remembering what I picked up the time before either.

Denise, I will bring my list to the store but forget to look at it. And it was fun modeling for sure, but it made me realize how ridiculous our beauty standards are. One day, my agent would scrutinize me and say, "You look a little pale. Stay home and get some sun." The next day, I come in, the agent scrutinizes me and says, "Why is your hair so brassy? Didn't you cover your hair while you were out in the sun?" Honestly?! It was like writing, in that you had to have a ton of confidence in yourself just to keep going. But unlike writing, you don't have much control over how you look. The thick skin I gained there made writing criticism easier to take though ;-).
