The appeal of the single dad

There’s something very appealing, isn’t there, about a loving dad and his sweet baby?

I had a friend who was a single dad with a dear little girl. He went on a walking vacation with her in a backpack and said he couldn’t get over how much female attention he attracted. I told him I didn’t know why he was so surprised!

I like to challenge myself in my writing. My February release for Harlequin Romance, Second Chance with the Single Dad, is my first “single dad” story. It’s also my first “friends to lovers” story.

Girl-next-door schoolteacher Georgia Lang and handsome self-made millionaire Wil Hudson go way back as “just friends.” They know each other so well they claim to read each other’s thoughts. But not everyone wishes the platonic friends well and the friendship ends abruptly and painfully. What happens when Wil becomes a single dad to adorable baby Nina and asks Georgia for help? Can they salvage the friendship—and perhaps acknowledge the tiny flickering flames that just might have been there all along?

Here's the blurb for the story:

From long-lost friends...
To newfound family?

“Georgia and Wil were best friends until he married and disappeared from her life. Now he’s back, asking Georgia to forget the past and help him secure his future—the daughter he never knew he had! Georgia’s heart goes out to new dad Wil, but there’s an uncharted chemistry fizzing between them and she must protect her heart. Can they confront their unspoken attraction and finally become a family?”

I’m always seeing on social media happily married couples saying they married their best friend. Do you think friends-to-lovers is a good basis for a happy relationship? Or do you prefer the quick flare of instant attraction?

I’d love to see your comments! Post a comment to be in the draw for a signed copy of my new release Second Chance with the Single DadPlease include your email contact if you’d like to be in the draw.

I am not on social media, but I don't believe a lot of what I hear or read on there. They might be all lovey dovey right now, but odds are that that will stop soon enough. Hardly anyone stays together anymore. It is not for better or worse. It is for as long as I can handle being with you, and then we're done!

I have been scrapbooking old pictures from magnetic photo albums (throwing out thousands of duplicate/unnecessary photos in the process). Every single wedding we have attended since marrying in July/81 until Sept/95 (as that's as far as I've gotten so far) has resulted in divorce - EXCEPT for weddings with our siblings who have, for the most part, remained together at least 30 years each so far. Just yesterday we heard of two more couples breaking up after 15 years together. The one was partially due (as who knows the full stories) to reconnecting with her old flame from high school, while the other one had a new coworker paying a lot of attention to the woman that she didn't feel she was getting with her spouse. There's no doubt in my mind that if there was social media out there when they wed, those couples would have been bragging about being so in love, etc. too....

I think both can be true. I think being with one's loved one is what makes him a best friend, confidant, and lover.

Congratulations on your latest release!

Wow, Laney, that's quite a bad track record for marriages! It' such a shame, isn't it!

Thank you Denise! Good point about loved one being all those things!

These days, I believe in both because I have now experienced both. The love of my life at 17 was a fast burn. The man I met nearly two years ago has been a slow burn, and if we end up together, he has definitely been worth the wait.

HI Therese, thanks for that interesting comment - it can be different at different stages of life, and different people of course!
