Janice Maynard: January Is Not for Sissies!!

I have a confession to make.  January is my least favorite month of the year.  Except for including my husband’s birthday (on the 1st no less), January has little to recommend it in my eyes.

Perhaps you think I’m being harsh.  But all months can’t have the sweet sunshine of April or the piquant aromas and bright colors of October.  January is what I call the hibernation of the soul.  All the decorations have been taken down and packed away.  Dark comes early.  And some years (2014 anyone?) the temperatures plummet.

Before I changed careers, I was an elementary school teacher.  Back then January had a dollop of mystery and excitement.  Will we get a snow day, or won’t we???  I worked in a rural county, so it didn’t take much to call off school.  I lived and died by the Weather Channel.  J

Now that I’m self-employed, January is simply not that exciting.  The writing moves along like slow molasses.  Going out of the house is an obstacle course of coats and scarves and mittens to be layered and buttoned.

But there is one good thing about this month.  February is not far behind!  It’s the month of romance and love stories and Valentines from little boys with sweet smiles and bashful hearts.

Thankfully, I have plenty of books to keep me warm this January: favorites by Nora Roberts, Sarah Morgan, and Lori Foster, to mention a few.

I wish for each of you an early spring, lots of yummy romance heroes, and plenty of time to read!  (P.S. I have a brand new series kicking off in April, starting with A Not-So-Innocent Seduction.  I hope you’ll enjoy meeting the Kavanaghs of Silver Glen, North Carolina.)

Leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of A Not-So-Innocent Seduction!

God bless,
Janice Maynard

I love the title of the post. You had me laughing.

I find that in January I'm still winding down from the previous year. It takes a while to get going in the new one.

I totally agree with what you said above. I too am self-employed and try not to leave the house because of all the bundling-up required.
That being said, I just got a contract with a big company in town, and they want me working in their office (rather than the comfort of my pj's here, boo hoo), so we'll see how that goes. The money will sure come in handy....
My husband wants to retire at 65 this year (but we can't afford it, hence my job), my daughter got engaged the day I got the job (yesterday), and I'm already begrudging all the time I won't be able to read as many books! Seriously, life IS good. As long as there is love, and we do have an abundance of that, then life is good. VERY GOOD.

Nothing beats a cold weather than a good book (s) in hand. It's nice to curl beside a window and read and be lazy all day. :)

Another January birthday here... at least mine is at the end of the month.. so there's none of that... Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday joint presents!

I'm not a big fan of January either, especially this year. It's been bitter cold here since the first day of winter. Oh we've had a few decent days in between the bad but not nearly enough. At least while the weather has been so bad I've got a lot of reading done. I'd say we could look forward to spring but then we worry about tornadoes here so I won't start wishing my life away and wish for fall, it's my favorite season. I'll look forward to starting your new series, I love series books.

Mary - I know what you mean! And then it's time to do taxes… :(

Laney - I so agree! Our daughters and families came over for dinner tonight… just because…no special occasion. We always have fun and laugh a lot. I feel very blessed...

Lory - I love to write in my bedroom where I can look out at the yard and see the mountains… some hot chocolate, and a cozy afghan... There are definitely some nice things about winter. :)

Funny. :) I'm glad you didn't have to double up. Ha!

Linda - We had some very scary tornado times three years ago. I hope this spring will be calm for everyone! Thanks for taking an interest in my books. :)

LOL... I totally feel ya about January being such a bleh month as far as weather goes. We are seesawing right now between arctic cold and actually nice weather. But I still think of January as a month of new beginnings :) Thanks for sharing!

I dream about Key West and anywhere hot…though I am so fair I burn to a crisp. So maybe a hot place with a nice umbrella. :)

Erin - I do so love a brand new blank calendar filled with possibilities! I''m kind of nerdy that way. :)

I dislike winter weather. I'm normally in Florida but this year I'm stuck in frigid cold Wisconsin. I did enjoy the white Christmas and a beautiful Christmas Symphony Concert at the State Capital. I do like to walk and to ski but this year it's too cold. My mid January birthday was sunny! Hope it's an omen forecasting a great year to come. I'm looking forward to the birth of my second grandchild, who is due around March 19th!

Happy Valentine's Day!

I will look for your two Desires shown above too!
