Molly O'Keefe: Casting The Heroes of Crooked Creek

I never used look at pictures of people to find inspiration for my characters. Because in my head every hero looked like either Matt Damon or Ben Affleck. But with my hockey heroes for the Crooked Creek books, I started to need inspiration.  For Luc in Can't Buy  Me Love - it was easy. Steve Yzerman. Those sharp features, elegant but masculine. Shoe-in for Luc.

Eli, the hero of Can't Hurry Love, isn't a hockey player, he's a cowboy. Surly and broody. I couldn't use Ben Affleck, he's too pretty. So I decided on Russell Crowe. Younger Russell Crowe.

Now, Billy, the hero of Crazy Thing Called Love, posed a huge problem. Billy has a scar from the corner of his lip down to his chin, that distorts his smile. And let me tell you, looking up pictures of men with facial scars is not a good time. Originally, he was modeled after David Semenko, who was basically Gretzky's bodyguard on The Oilers. Gretzy got to be great, in large part because Semenko protected him. This mirrored the dynamic between Luc and Billy. But Semenko is not handsome. In any photo.

So, I went with pretty boy Mike Fisher. Because honestly, he's so pretty. Now, imagine a scar at his lip and you've got Billy. What do you think? Should I have picked a prettier hockey player? Is there one?

I am giving away one set of the Crooked Creek books to a commenter. You have to be over 18 and in North America.  Come check out my facebook page and website for more very cool contests: http://www.facebook.com/MollyOKeefeBooks?ref=hl

I know I'm old, especially when the first hockey player I envision is Bobby Orr! Not when he played hockey, but now, when he's on the cusp of turning 65 (gasp!). What a cutie pie (in my eyes). The smile ... the grin reaching his eyes ... the hair ... the bod. (Oh dear, it's too early in the morning to be thinking all this, LOL!)

Bobby Orr is SO handsome and the twinkle in his eye is a huge part of that. A lot of those hockey players aren't aging as well as he is! Very handsome.

I enjoy reading sports themed books, including hockey. Rachel Gibson and Susan Elizabeth Phillips both have series centered around a pro sport. I don't really follow professional hockey, so I'm only familiar with the major players.

I love your cast for the books. I'm older as well and since I'm from Calgary I have to pick Joe Nieuwendyk, Doug Gilmore, Al MacInnis and, if you like red heads, Lanny MacDonald as my favorite hockey hero/hunks.

I also think Bobby Orr has aged really well.

Add Jaci Burton to the list of authors writing
about sports figures - her covers are to die
for! For inspiration, I would have selected
actor David Boreanaz, who I think might ac-
tually play a bit of hockey!

If you think of Mike Fisher around the playoff times, then you'll get a little roughed up pretty boy (darn that Carrie Underwood's luck :P) :) Great choice!! I absolutely love books that are sports themed, even more so when it revolves around hockey!!

I think Mike Fisher is a perfect choice and as for prettier? I think he is pretty in his own way. And the other choices are pretty darn good. Hockey players in general are kind of sexy so I think there were many options to choose from, but I like your choices.

Your choice was ideal. The athlete is always great and he is. Best wishes and your books look wonderful.

Don't forget to add Deidre Martin to the list of authors with sports related books! She's got a whole series with hockey too! Since it's my favorite sport, I love that I can blend them with my other favorite past time, reading! And I can't fault your choices at all :)

I would add handsome goalie Jim Craig from the Olympic gold winning 1980 Miracle On Ice hockey team.

Also, retired Joe Sakic from the Colorado Avalanche team!

I love sport heroes!

I haven't read any of your books yet Molly but these three sound like books I would enjoy!
