Since I’m working on the Love at the Chocolate Shop series
with Melissa, I was able to read an advance copy of this wonderful book, and it
left me with a real appreciation for the importance of being thankful.
Every time I pick up a newspaper or catch the news on TV or
the radio, I am thankful for all the big things in my life that make me one of
the truly fortunate. I’m thankful for my children, husband, friends and family.
I’m thankful to live in a lawful country that respects the rights of all
humans. I’m thankful for my health, for my home, and for having the means to
live comfortably unlike so many in the world.
Yes. So fortunate.
A poem I was reading last night also reminded me it’s important
to reflect on all the little things that give joy as well. And so, today, as I
sit at the island in my kitchen and look out my window I am thankful for…
The delicious latte my husband makes me every morning…
The lovely finches and chickadees who are feeding on
sunflower seeds outside my window right now…
The space and quiet to do work I love right from my own
home…
The knowledge that I don’t have to cook dinner because there
is left over pot roast in the fridge…
And maybe best of all, a wonderful book waits for me to
start reading it when I finish my work for the day…
What joys are making you smile today? I hope anticipation
for reading a good book is one of them.
I love autumn. Always have. Maybe it’s because I was one of those kids who liked school, (even though simultaneously riddled with anxiety on that first day.) I also love, love, love the colors and crunch of leaves as they begin to drift from the trees, the fresh smell cool rain on thirsty earth and how great hot oatmeal tastes on a chilly morning.
Fall also begins the countdown to Christmas, Hallowe’en and in our house, several birthdays, so there’s much to look forward to as the season changes.
This year, there’s another thing to look forward to: the launch of a new book series. If you read yesterday’s post by C.J. Carmichael, you’ll be familiar with Love At The Chocolate Shop. If not, and you enjoy heartwarming romances and, ahem, chocolate, then you’ll want to pay attention. The first, Melt My Heart, Cowboy, by C.J. releases tomorrow, October 6. I’ve already read this story and readers, it’s wonderful.
There are six talented authors writing a total of 12 books, to be released one per month for an entire year. A year of chocolate and love, people! How great is that? Along with C.J. you’ll be treated to stories by Melissa McClone, Debra Salonen, Marin Thomas, Steena Holmes and me, Roxanne Snopek. Writing can be a solitary pursuit, until you agree to be the front man for a twelve-book series, working with five other authors, and then suddenly, it’s not solitary at all!
The idea for a series focused on a chocolate shop in small town Montana originated in February, when my publisher, Jane Porter, suggested that readers had loved my Sage Carrigan and her Copper Mountain Chocolate Shop (from my book, Promise Me Cowboy). I agreed there was potential to build a series around Sage and her shop, but I was leery of signing on to write too many books. I was also leery of working with a group of authors on the project because I’d been involved in other multi-author series and ended up pulling out great clumps of my hair on a daily basis.
It did occur to me, though, that the right group of authors might make all the difference. What we
needed was talented authors—but no divas. We needed to work together in
building our world and our stories, plus we also needed team players willing to
do their share when it came time to promote and spread the word about our
books.
Tentatively I sent out a few emails, and to my surprise and
delight managed to snag some pretty amazing talent. Before I knew it we had set
up a Facebook Group. Contracts were signed and story planning commenced.
Suddenly, via Facebook and email, I was in daily contact with five creative
authors, and I’m happy to say not a temper was frayed. Melissa McClone, Debra
Salonen, Roxanne Snopek, Marin Thomas and Steena Holmes...all are such a treat
to work with.
Melissa is incredibly organized and business-minded. She
keeps us focused. Debra is wonderfully fun and enthusiastic... she’s positivity
personified. Roxanne is incredibly creative. She came up with this wonderful
caption for our series: “What Love Tastes Like.” We use it in all our promo
because we think it captures the spirit of our books so well. Marin Thomas is a
Facebook guru—she and her wonderful assistant Denise have a million excellent
ideas for promoting our books. And Steena Holmes is our self-professed
chocolate expert. She’s so committed to the cause she actually volunteered to
visit Paris on our behalf and report back on all the best chocolatiers she
discovers. Now that’s sacrifice.
So here you have it. A documented, real life example, of six
authors managing to work on one series and not drive each other crazy. On top
of that, I believe we’re coming up with some excellent stories for our readers.
Happily, our very first book, my own Melt My Heart Cowboy is being released this month on October 6.
Finally we’re going to be able to share some of the fruits of our hard work
with our readers. Of course, Melt My
Heart Cowboy is just the beginning. There are eleven books to come, one a
month, until the series wraps up in September 2017.

I'll admit I have started thinking about Christmas. Usually I put it off until after Halloween at the very least. Heck, I'll procrastinate as long as possible, but my daughter lives away now. We had to start thinking about what it would look like so she could ask for time off work.
Not that we're planning anything exciting. I love the idea of spending Christmas somewhere tropical, but we usually stay home and do low-key things like play games and go for walks. I grabbed these photos from last year:
You could be forgiven for thinking this is Monopoly, but it's actually a game called The Gambler. As far as I recall, you don't have to know when to hold 'em or when to fold 'em.
My daughter loves Family Game Night and forces it upon us whenever we're together. We always have fun, which is why we succumb to the pressure. Pictionary is a big favourite, but sometimes we mix it up with something like Boggle, or, in this case, something we don't even remember how to play.
I'm a big walker, so that's always my choice if given the option. This is about a five minute drive from our house:

Then, of course, there is turkey dinner. But on that topic... last winter I was organizing some paperwork with Canadian Customs so I could bring swag in from the US and avoid the duty. I went to visit their office, which is about five minutes beyond this gorgeous view, and when I came out of the building, these creatures rushed me.
I'm not afraid of birds, especially not dumb ones like wild turkeys, but when they all came running at me, it was fairly startling. I realized after the fact that someone must be feeding them, but for one second I had that panicked thought that I wouldn't make it to my car before they 'got' me. Of course, my second thought was, "Free. But looks like tough eating." Ha! As if I could pluck a bird myself, let alone 'get' one.

I want to tell you about a group that I’m calling #authorswithheart. They helped me with a project near and dear to my heart—providing Mother’s Day goodie bags to moms staying at two Washington state Fisher Houses. If you don’t know anything about Fisher House, click on this link. It’s a fantastic organization that supports military families.
The first goodie bag!
For the past three years, I’ve sent Mother’s Day goodie bags to the two Fisher Houses. I’d seen a request for help from a service member care package organization and offered to send something.
The first year was a solo effort. Each clear goodie bag contained an autographed book, a pair of footies, a candy bar and two tea bags. I secured them with a ribbon and attached a little card.

The next year, I was no longer volunteering with the organization, but offered to send something again if they’d like. They did, and I decided to do more this time.
I asked authors, readers and friends to sponsor Thirty-One Thermal Totes. I also asked authors if they’d send a few books. Some authors sent more than a few and also included swag, which I hadn’t thought to ask for. I was so happy how the tote bags turned out, and they were a big hit!
This year, I found out the organization I’d gone through the past two year had changed their focus so wasn't working with the Fisher House for Mother's Day, but they gave me the phone numbers of the house managers. I called and asked if I could send Mother’s Day totes this year. They said yes!

I approached authors first, starting with last year’s participants and then asked other authors. I'd learned my lesson last year so made a point to request swag!
By the time I’d heard back from everyone, I had enough authors wanting to sponsor totes. I also had more than enough books, not to mention swag. I was so excited, and that excitement grew each time another box arrived. Opening them was like Christmas!
Thirty thermal totes were filled with over 200 romance novels, a goodie bag filled with book/author swag (bookmarks, pens, post-it notes, jewelry, key chains, chapstick, jar opener, nail files, measuring spoon, combs, postcards, luggage tags, etc.), a goodie bag filled with pampering items (nail polish, shower puffy, tissue, hair band, comb, footie socks, and candy and a cone of flavored popcorn!
Putting it all together!
The goodie bag assembly took place on my dining room table, which we only use for holiday dinners! I sorted the swag into thirty piles then bagged it! All went into a tote bag along with a card with the sponsor author's name. They were boxed and mailed to the two Fisher Houses.
One of the Fisher Houses wrote to me the following:
"...these have been delightful, the guests love them!"
I'd like to give a shout-out to the authors who helped me this year. Some sponsored totes, others donated books and/or swag. Some did all three. I can't thank them enough for their generosity and time.

I love my cats and dogs. Some are only here temporarily if they are fosters, but each holds a special place in my heart. And sometimes in my writing.
My furbabies sometimes manage their way into a story, as inspiration or namesakes. Yoda—a black kitten we'd adopted from the rescue I'd eventually foster for—inspired "Boots," the black kitten who steals a prince's heart in NOT-SO-PERFECT PRINCESS and leads him to the heroine. Manchester/Manny in IT STARTED WITH A CRUSH is based off Rocket, one of my first cats who is no longer with us. Maurice, a Norwegian Elkhound in THE MAN BEHIND THE PINSTRIPES, shares a doesn't-know-when-to-stop-eating trait with our dog Chaos. The diva foster kitty Blossom in THE BILLIONAIRE'S NANNY was inspired by a foster cat named Gabbro.
Not all the animals in my books are character pets.
In my new release HER CINDERELLA PRINCESS, my heroine Emily's has an old, worn, used-to-be-white stuffed animal cat named Miss Mousie. The name comes from a real life Miss Mousie—a foster failure who we adopted.
Miss Mousie has a blog and Facebook page of her own. A couple years ago, romance and mystery authors helped raise money for the then-foster cat so the animal rescue could afford an expensive surgery she needed. She sometimes appears on my Facebook page or Twitter feed as my author assistant and muse. She takes her job seriously, never leaving my side while I write. All her hard work leads her to sleep and sleep and sleep some more. Perfect inspiration for Emily's stuffed cat!

When I first started writing—back in the days when Silhouette existed and Amazon didn’t—I thought a happily ever after (HEA) ending meant a declaration of love from the hero and heroine followed by a marriage proposal. Then a wonderful editor told me that my HEA needs more. She said when a reader reaches “The End” they should believe the couple is in it for the long haul no matter what happens after the story ends.
Talk about a light bulb moment for this newbie romance author! I’ve tried to take the advice to heart on my subsequent titles. As I have, I've also noticed my personal view of HEAs has changed as I've gone from a single-twentysomething aspiring writer to a married-with-three-kids published author.
When I heard the song Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran a few months ago, I tried imagining the hero and heroine of my then work-in-progress saying similar words to each other. At first I couldn't. Oops, but during rewrites I finally got to the point where they could, and I knew I had the HEA I needed. For those who haven’t heard the song, here’s the video:
Today at the funeral for my sister’s mother-in-law, I saw a real life HEA. Two people who made a seventy-three year marriage work. Seventy-three years! Talk about the long haul! Ed Sheeran sings about seventy. This couple was in their nineties. I asked my brother-in-law if I could blog about his parents who I first met in 1991, and he said yes. He thought his mom would have loved that.
Wilma graduated from college in 1943. That same year she
married Herald. They had four children. Her youngest (my
brother-in-law) was born when she was forty-two. Herald was a minister
so Wilma kept busy as his wife and raising children. She taught speech.
She loved singing and playing instruments, too. Once the grandbabies,
then the great grandbabies arrived, well, let’s just say, they were her joys,
and I looked forward to the pictures she sent with her Christmas cards!
When I arrived at the funeral home with my oldest daughter, my sister
greeted us. She mentioned the photos set out on a nearby table and how
one of them amazed her—a black and white photo of a much younger Wilma
and Herald in a passionate embrace. By the time my sister got married,
her in-laws were in their seventies so this was a new way of seeing them. I found the photo, and it
was a romance cover worthy embrace.
During the service,
Wilma’s children spoke about the last few months of her life. Wilma
couldn’t always remember things or people, including Herald. Once as she
was sitting next to him on the loveseat, she asked if he was really her
husband. Upon being told yes, she said then it was okay for them to
hold hands. Another story was how Herald had described Wilma shuffling
across the floor, but how she used to run and play. When Herald said
goodbye to her at the casket, I had tears running down my face. I can’t
remember his exact words, but he mentioned he’d be seeing her sometime.
Was Wilma and Herald’s life perfect? No life is, but through seventy-three years of good times and bad times (including the loss of a son and a grandson), their faith and love stayed strong.
For me, HEA means no matter what life throws at you, you and your beloved will get through it together. And in the case of Wilma and Herald, now separated by death, their love will remain until the "sometime" Herald mentioned when they'll be together again.

Last month, a reader asked how I handled it all—family, writing, house, laundry, etc. I'd love to say effortlessly. I'd really love to say I have someone who cleans my house for me. I'd love to say anything but the truth.
What's the truth?
When I'm busy, especially with writing, something has to give, and that's the house. There are times when I've let things go completely for months due to a combination of illness and deadlines, but the fallout (as you can see in the before and after pics) is too hard to deal with.
So I've found a few ways to keep the house liveable while on deadline or caring for sick kids or dealing with some other curve ball being thrown at you. Emphasis on liveable. f you're into white glove cleaning or a neatnik, stop reading now. By many standards (including my mother's), this wouldn't pass muster or be considered cleaning. But it works for me, so thought I'd share for others who find themselves with too much going on and the housekeeping falling by the wayside.
Years ago I discovered the Fly Lady. It wasn't long before I unsubscribed to her notices because the constant emails on what I should do around the house drove me crazy. I also had a huge issue with her saying to get dressed first thing each morning. One of the perks of being a writer is being able to write while wearing pajamas. But a couple of her ideas made sense to me then, and I still use them though I have no idea what she calls them. I seem to remember snazzy names for things so check the site if you want her official take on the tasks.
This is my Keep the House Liveable daily list:
1) Do the dishes
If the kids did what they were supposed to the night before (unload, load and start) then I skip this step. More often than not the sink looks like it had a party overnight, and it's up to me to clean up. But this is always the first thing I do if it hasn't been done. Nothing like an empty sink to start your day. The kitchen just looks better. The Fly Lady sure is right about that!
2) Put in a load of laundry
With two adults and three kids in the house, I can't afford to miss a day without doing a load, sometimes two. With three swimmers in the house, we go through many towels, too! By doing a load in the morning, I've got a big item crossed off my To Do list. Of course, folding is another matter. I don't mind wrinkled clothes and the cats like to sleep on the pile on the bed, so folding is one of those things I save for when I'm talking to someone on the phone or the pile gets so high the peak deserves a name!
3) Clutter Buster
In five minutes or less, I pick up any paper that can be recycled or whatever else can be thrown away. Sometimes I spend the time going through the mail if I haven't.
If there's something left out in the Great Room or kitchen that doesn't belong, it goes in that person's crap baskets, something I learned about in this article. You can read about me implementing them at our house here.
This step is key for me and why my office in the pics above became a nightmare. Clutter is one of those things that I can overlook and even picking up for five minutes can make a big difference when it's time to get back to your normal routine.
4) Spot Clean
I'll take five minutes to 10 minutes, to spot clean whatever needs it most that day whether that's the kitchen counter, bathroom, table, walls, shelves or floors/carpets when the dust bunnies are more the size of hares.
The key to doing this quick is having the right equipment handy. For floors: broom, dustpan, Swiffer, vacuum cleaner (depending on what the floors/rugs/carpets needs it.) For dusting: a feather duster makes it easy-peasy. For surface cleaning: I have two spray bottles that I've filled myself. One contains a mixture of vinegar and water. The other is a mix vinegar and Dawn dishwashing liquid. This will pretty much tackle anything I need it to and is inexpensive to make.
So in just a few minutes, I can do the bare minimum while life is crazy-busy to keep the house from being a total hazard. Then once things slow down I can get back on track and do some real cleaning.

Readers have asked me how I come up with character's names. I wish I had a process, but there's no one way. Often a name just comes to me. Sometimes I hear one somewhere that resonates with me. Other times I've brainstormed and/or asked for help. One thing I have figured out is I need to be more careful with what I name my secondary male characters.
Why?
Two reasons: Potential sequels and Bill Paulson
Bill first appeared as a secondary character in a Harlequin Romance called Rescued by the Magic of Christmas. His name came from Pacific Northwest climbers I met while researching the book—Bill (two shared this name) and Paul. Bill sounded like a good first name for a firefighter and volunteer mountain rescuer, a fun-loving, needs-to-grow-up, but has a big heart kind of guy.
He made an appearance in a free read I wrote for Harlequin.com, three sequels to the first book, and ended up the hero of the final story in the series, a series I never intended to write when I started the first book. There's nothing wrong with the name Bill. It fit him. But I'll be honest, had I know Bill might one day be the hero in his own book, I probably wouldn't have named him that even though now I couldn't imagine him called anything else!
When I wrote Home For Christmas in 2013, I kept thinking of Bill. The story had sequel possibilities so I kept thinking hero potential when I was coming up with names. The heroine's brother ended up being named Tyler and a wrangler was called Zack.
My Haley's Bay series for Harlequin Special Edition features a family of seven siblings, five of which are brothers: AJ, Ellis (already married), Flynn, Declan and Grady. Once again, Bill popped into my head. Only this time I could hear him say what's wrong with a Tim or a Tom or a Bob. Nothing, I had to admit. But those weren't the names that fit the Cole brothers.
When I wrote Picture Perfect Love, I could almost hear Bill whispering a name. Sam. Sam. Sam...
I knew when to give up!
One of the secondary characters is named Sam. He's a nice guy who needs to grow up a little, and he's got definite hero potential!
