10th Anniversary Celebration! Annie West

This month marks a special anniversary for me. Not today but very, very soon, I'll be celebrating ten years since the day I sold my first book to Harlequin for its Presents line. Yay! I still remember that day vividly. I woke early and thought I'd check the inbox for the inevitable rejection. You see, I'd received rejections before, even 'good' rejections and learned to expect them. Even if this time I'd been asked to make revisions to the manuscript. I couldn't believe it possible I'd actually sell a story to my favourite series line. The silly thing was that when I found a message from the London office (where Presents stories are edited) I skimmed it several times looking for the 'but unfortunately it doesn't meet our requirements'. It took me a while to notice the message was headed 'Acceptance'. Even then I had to grab my husband and make him read the message in case I'd got it wrong. It was such a long-held dream of mine I couldn't believe it.
The ten year anniversary has crept up on me suddenly. At first it seemed a very, very slow process, with the long lag time between acceptance and proof reading the edited version of that first story, then waiting and waiting till it appeared in the shops - almost a year after that email! For those of you wondering, here's my first book for Harlequin.

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/mistress-for-the-taking-annie-west/1100378852?ean=9781552548110

A Mistress for the Taking was originally drafted as The Mistress Makeover. About a woman who, because of her past, had bad body image problems. It took a very special man, a real alpha, honourable hero, to help her change her life, even as she changed his. I loved that book and still do. One of the nice things about the rise of digital publishing is that it's still readily available!

Over the ten years since that first sale I've had 25 books published with Harlequin plus another two accepted for publication next year. In addition I've done a little self publishing and plan to do some more. Here's the first of my HOT ITALIAN NIGHTS novellas, 'Back in the Italian's Bed'.

I discovered writing novella length stories was a real treat. So far I've published two in this series and am planning more. It was enormous fun too, having the final say on the covers and titles for these - something I don't with my longer stories.

In these ten years I've been lucky to have books translated into many, many languages, and be contacted by readers from all around the world. I LOVE hearing from readers. Hearing their reactions to the stories that started in my head makes them even more real to me. One of the special treats too, has been getting manga or comic book editions of my books. Here's one that's already been in print and is coming out as an English language illustrated book. Seeing someone else's interpretation of my characters and story is absolutely fascinating!

And here's my latest story, 'Seducing His Enemy's Daughter'. It only struck me today as I wrote this, that this book, like my first Harlequin Presents, is also set in Sydney, on the Harbour - a location I don't use often in my stories. I wonder if subconsciously I was returning to familiar territory for my 25th story?

An Italian Treat for New Year

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you have a marvellous time in 2015.

I'm starting off the year on a high note as I recently released my second Hot Italian Nights novella called BOUGHT BY THE ITALIAN. Everything about this story makes me happy, from the actual writing, to the cover (which is so true to the story) to the reader feedback. Here's a taste:

She’s up for sale, and he’s the highest bidder.

Gennaro De Laurentis might prefer motorcycle leathers to Armani, but when it comes to what he wants, he’s as ruthless as any corporate raider in a killer suit. And he wants Chiara, the unforgettable woman who denied the passion sizzling between them and walked away without a backward glance. Now he has the high society princess back in his power – and he’ll risk everything to make her his.
When glamorous fashion designer Chiara Armati goes up for auction, she’s selling her company over dinner for charity. Nothing else. As bidding rises to astronomical heights, she gets nervous. Yet only when she discovers her purchaser’s identity does she realise she’s caught in a trap. She’s never stopped wanting Gennaro or forgiven his betrayal. Now she’s at his mercy – and he’s as irresistible as ever!

BOUGHT BY THE ITALIAN is on sale for just 99c at Amazon, Barnes and NobleiTunes and Smashwords.

This story features a very intense, passionate couple. It's a tale of heightened awareness and senses and I had much fun imagining their romantic midnight picnic. That lead me to wonder what an Italian man would prepare for a meal to seduce back the woman he loved. Because it was a picnic, I kept it simple, with cold snacks, like this bresaola which I tried in Cortina D'Ampezzo, in the Italian Alps - the region where the story is set.

Italian bresaola.
But there are so many wonderful, Italian culinary treats, from pizza to cappuccino, from pasta through to cannoli, cured hams and risotto through to tiramisu. What is your favourite Italian food? I'm giving away a copy of one of my Harlequin books to someone who leaves a comment today. Check back later to see the name of the winner.

One of the best pizzas ever.
If you fancy a little bit more Italian romance in 2015, look out for my other Hot Italian Nights novellaBACK IN THE ITALIAN'S BED.

No woman walks away from billionaire Fabrizio Armati’s bed. No woman except Jenna MacDonald. Now he’ll stop at nothing to get her back, and keep her there.

It’s love at first sight for Jenna when charismatic hotelier Fabrizio Armati sweeps her off her feet in Venice. That chance encounter sparks a sizzling affair that lasts until she discovers Fabrizio sees her as no more than a convenient, expendable mistress. Then her world falls apart.

Six months later Jenna tells herself she’s moved on. Until Fabrizio walks into a meeting to find her working for his greatest rival. She’s about to discover just how far he’ll go to get her back in his bed.

When revenge turns to passion, will surrender be on his terms, or hers?

Then on 1 February my Harlequin Presents book THE SULTAN'S HAREM BRIDE is released. Plenty of reading to start the new year!

Unexpected Italy - Annie West

Recently I published a novella set in Italy - BACK IN THE ITALIAN'S BED. It featured a suave, urbanite hero, Fabrizio, from Rome, who drives a Lamborghini and can't imagine a day without the perfect ristretto (or the perfect woman). The story is set predominantly in the south of the country. Think heat, sea views, colour-washed houses and Latin passion.

The word Italy conjures up so many different possibilities, from sun-drenched terraces with grapes hanging, ripe for the plucking, to mist hanging over the Tuscan countryside at sunrise. Or a Venetian canal with the sound of church bells and the gentle lap of waves. Or maybe hot-baked Sicily with its rich cuisine and history of blood feuds.

There are so many sides to this country. I thought I'd quickly share one I discovered recently. Those of you on FaceBook might have followed my travel photos there. If not, it's not too late to check out some of my pics. This link should get you there.

After attending a wonderful readers convention in Berlin, I took time for a little travel and research, including a short spell in the Dolomites of Northern Italy. Aren't they spectacular mountains?

This is an area where German is still for many their first language (a hangover from the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) and there's even a local language, Ladin, spoken in some valleys, which dates back to the days when Roman soldiers tramped the mountain roads! It's not uncommon to see signs in three languages, including Italian.

I knew this, but still, I was surprised at how the area was so unlike what I'd expected of Italy. Sure the wine was great, as were the pizzas (yes, I had one along the way) but the South Tirol surprised in so many ways. For instance, I expected Italians to be have high standards when it came to making coffee or pasta, or love (hey, I'm a romance writer). But I hadn't expected such attention to detail when it came to stacking wood.

The green of the country was incredible. I hadn't really thought of Italy as dairy country but of course it is here - and delicious dairy too.

There were amazing chalet-style houses in the mountains with overhanging balconies and lots of wood carving everywhere. We also noticed some old style, and absolutely beautiful, painted furniture in some of the older places.

Even the outdoor furniture in parks was often hewn from local timber and build along local, traditional lines.
All in all it was a wonderful trip to a glorious part of the world. We drove amazing alpine passes alongside Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and hordes of Giro d'Italia wannabes, testing their cycling skills on the steep slopes and never-ending hairpin bends. We met lovely people and ate terrific food and discovered something unexpected at almost every turn. Now I'm wondering about the possibility of a future story set in this gorgeous area.

In the meantime, if you yearn for a taste of Italy, why not try Fabrizio and Jenna's story? It's a short, spicy bite of Mediterranean romance that readers so far are loving. (Thank you if you're a reader who's posted a review!).

It was love at first sight when charismatic hotelier Fabrizio Armati swept Jenna off her feet in Venice. That chance meeting led to a night together, then to sizzling hot affair that lasted till the day she discovered he sees her as nothing but an expendable mistress.

Six months later Jenna tells herself she’s moved on. Until the day Fabrizio walks into a meeting to discover her working for his greatest rival and she discovers just how far he’ll go to get her back.

When passion ignites again, will it be on his terms, or hers?

You can grab BACK IN THE ITALIAN'S BED at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

What's your favourite part of Italy? Maybe somewhere you've visited or dreamed of visiting? A dream ride up a canal in Venice, a night in a romantic villa, or maybe sitting on the Spanish Steps in Rome, watching the world go by?

Arrivederci, and happy reading,
Annie

Tales of the Unexpected - Berlin, with Annie West

As you read this I'll be in Europe. I'm attending the Loveletter Convention for romance readers and writers in Berlin, in north Germany. After that I'll get to travel a little, researching locations for future books. Doesn't that sound marvellous? Sigh. Sometimes I just adore being a writer.

I'm so looking forward to meeting other romance fans in Germany. I gather there are attendees from all across Europe! I've heard great things about this Convention and it should be lots of fun. I'm also looking forward to visiting the city of Berlin, even just for a few days. What do you think of when Berlin is mentioned? For me it used to be something like this: the quadriga statue on top of the Brandenburg gate. Or the Berlin wall, the Cold War, global politics and all sorts of very serious historical events.
But not now. You see, I've visited the city once before (again on a short visit) and I was surprised at what I found, in addition to the serious monuments, historic sites and marvellous museums (if you're an archaeology fan, go to Berlin!). So, in the interests of armchair travel, and a little fun, here are just a couple of the surprising things I found in that serious city.

Yes, that IS a giraffe made of Lego. And instead of horns, he/she has sprouted daisies on its head. NOT what I expected to find in the centre of the city.

On the theme of animals, how about this cute little outfit spied in one of the biggest department stores I've ever seen. My informant told me it's the biggest in Europe and certainly its gourmet food floor was impressive enough to be just that. Back to the photo though - how do you fancy a pair of real leather lederhosen, embroidered with eidelweiss flowers for your dog?

As a romance writer I was particularly thrilled to find this frog prince in a well-known chocolate shop. Honestly, just the scent of cocoa-laden richness in that place was enough to make me feel faint. Yuum!

And, having visited one chocolate shop, how could I miss the chance to visit a second? If you happen to know Ritter Sport chocolates, you'll recognise these as giant-sized blocks of chocolate, piled from floor to ceiling. Enough to make any chocolate fan salivate.

Have you ever visited a place expecting to find one thing, only to discover something completely different and surprising? What's your favourite surprise find in a new place?

If you're after a surprise find of another sort, you might want to check out my first ever romance novella. It's got all the emotional punch and sizzle of my full length novels but in a bite-sized chunk. BACK IN THE ITALIAN'S BED is on sale now for just 99 cents from Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Here's a taste:

Annie West: Back in the Italian's Bed

No woman walks away from billionaire Fabrizio Armati’s bed. No woman except Jenna MacDonald. Now he’ll stop at nothing to get her back, and keep her there.

I'm proud as punch to announce the release of my first novella ever. My first self published work too!
If you love strong, charismatic heroes with Mediterranean panache and all the skills of a Latin lover, you'll enjoy Fabrizio's story. Personally, I love the fact that despite his strength and self-confidence and all that experience wooing and winning women, there's one woman who doesn't make life easy for him. In fact Jenna challenges him in ways that make him furious and frustrated and determined to win her back on his terms. This one is a roller coaster ride of sizzling passion and raw emotion. Here's a taste:
It’s love at first sight for Jenna when charismatic hotelier Fabrizio Armati sweeps her off her feet in Venice. That chance encounter sparks a sizzling affair that lasts until she discovers Fabrizio sees her as no more than a convenient, expendable mistress. Then her world falls apart.

When revenge turns to passion, will surrender be on his terms, or hers?
You'll have to read the story to find out, but at just 99c I'm hoping you decide to see how Jenna and Fabrizio resolve their differences. You can buy the book from Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
If you were going to be swept off your feet, where would you choose? Venice, like Jenna? Paris? Somewhere quiet and secluded? Or maybe somewhere unexpected - do you dream of Mr Right turning up unexpectedly where you work or in your home town? What would be your fantasy first meet?
I'll give away a signed copy of one of my books to someone who joins me in conversation here.
