Sarah Morgan: The Scents of Summer

Here in the UK we have had the wettest winter I can remember in a long time. Yes, I know people joke about rainy London but generally we have plenty of sunshine (just not the week you’re visiting probably!) but not this winter. I’ve never been so ready to fling open the windows of my house and let the sunshine in. And we finally have sunshine!

I love the summer months. Every year my family and I have a big gathering at the beach and we do all the same things we’ve done since the children were small. Although my boys are long past the toddling stage, my youngest made an excellent yacht out of sand last summer, proving you’re never too old for sand sculpture. There is something uplifting about being by the sea, feeling the salty breeze and hearing the shriek of the gulls.

When I was pondering what I love most about summer, I realized much of it involves scent and sound. The smell of new mown grass, the clink of ice in a long cool drink, the sound of waves as they crash against rocks or lap against a sandy beach (take me there now!). There’s something about sunshine that encourages you to take life a little slower and savor the small things. The heroine of my latest release, Suddenly Last Summer, discovers that for herself when she is forced to move from the city to a pretty beach house.

Suddenly Last Summer is a warm, sexy contemporary romance designed to create that holiday feeling when you don’t have time to take a holiday.

For a chance to win a copy, leave a comment telling me what you love most about summer.

Happy reading!

  1. When I was growing up, in America, my favorite thing about summer was getting to swim outside. Now that I live in the UK, my favorite thing about summer is getting to take my two little boys to the park in the sunshine, sharing a picnic with them there and then making fruit smoothies when we get home!

  6. We host 50-100 people every summer with a "potluck wine party". My daughter and I win bottles of homemade wine in May (from badminton tournaments we enter), and we share them all with friends/neighbours/relatives at a potluck afternoon/supper. By having a potluck, we don't have to buy tons of meat/buns in advance and store the leftovers afterward, but the best part is that it doesn't matter how many show up! They bring their own lawn chairs/potluck item/non-wine drinks, we have a fridge running in the garage, lots of power cords for heated foods, and plenty of space to socialize in our backyard under the shady trees. If it rains, we have a garage and carport, plus our house is available. Several play hockey in our driveway, while others play croquet and ladder ball. Sometimes our friends in a local band serenade us into the evening hours. All in all, it is quite enjoyable (except for cleaning beforehand, but it is a great motivator every year!).

  7. I love the longer days and the warmer temps. Here in Ohio it feels like winter lasts 9 months of the year, so I'm thrilled when summer arrives!

  13. I love spending the extra time outside with my grandkids. They grow up so fast that spending time with them now is very important to me. They like to swim and jump on the trampoline so I will sit in the back yard and watch them. Then we will cook out hamburgers and hotdogs and make a picnic out of it, it's fun.

  15. I love getting together with my friends and having BBQs. Parties are fun indoors but there's just something about being able to run around in a yard, basking in the sunshine and feeling the cool air that makes it that much sweeter.
