Vicky Dreiling: The Glamorous Life of an Author

The day I sold my first book (June 19, 2009) I knew my life would change, but for that shining moment, all I cared about was celebrating with my writing friends. I didn’t think too much beyond savoring my accomplishment, but despite knowing many published authors, I still had visions that my life would somehow become … glamorous. My first indication that the writer’s life might not be all glam occurred with the dreaded Professional Author Photo. I distinctly recall asking the photographer if he could work miracles with Photoshop. Notably, my Professional Author Photo looks ….like me.

So much for glamming up.

My second indication that the writer’s life might not be nearly as glamorous as I’d hoped occurred when I got my first revision letter. It was almost as long as the book. OK, I am exaggerating, but I gulped multiple times as I read that letter.

My third indication that the writer’s life might not be nearly as glamorous as I’d envisioned occurred in the frantic middle of revising my first book. One late evening, I paused for air and realized I’d never gotten out of my pajamas.

My fourth indication that writing might not be glamorous occurred while brushing my teeth one morning. I looked in the mirror and thought, OMG, my hair made me look like … Medusa.

My fifth indication that writing might be just a little glamorous occurred when I finished the final round of revisions on my first book. I got a bit teary eyed as I realized that my editor’s brilliant insights had helped me transform that debut novel.

After sending off that final version of my first book, I knew the actual writing wasn’t even remotely glamorous, but the day I received my first Advance Reader Copies of HOW TO MARRY A DUKE, I was thrilled and took multiple photos.

Four years after selling my first book, I find there is no glamor involved in the creation part of a book, but there is something far more special. My thanks to all of the readers who email, tweet or send Facebook messages letting me know they enjoyed one of my books. I assure you, that part is just a tiny bit glamorous.

Vicky Dreiling is a Triple RITA finalist, confirmed historical romance junkie, and Anglophile. Frequent business trips to the UK allowed her to indulge her passion for all things Regency England. Bath, Stonehenge, and Spencer House are among her favorite places. She is, however, truly sorry for accidentally setting off a security alarm in Windsor Castle. That unfortunate incident led her British colleagues to nickname her “Trouble.” Her upcoming release WHAT A WICKED EARL WANTS publishes May 28, 2013.

Hi, Vicky!

I’m so happy for you with all of your wonderful successes. I’m sure that the actual writing of a novel cannot be glamorous because it must involve simple blood, sweat and tears. However, the glamorous part comes afterward when the book has been published and received with glowing reviews. That’s what makes it all worth it. Congratulations! I’m so looking forward to reading “What a Wicked Earl Wants.” All the best!

A very sweet post. We, the readers, do think what you do is very glamorous! I already have an ARC and will be reviewing it soon so I don't need the book. Just wanted to say I enjoyed the post.

I'm sure there is a lot of glamorous occasions. But I am also sure that being an author is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. However, you do it so well.... keep on giving us those wonderful reads!!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments. Today, you all sprinkled a little glam in my life. And boy do I need it. I'm packing for a booksigning in Fort Worth and for the Romantic Times conference. At the moment I look like a "bag lady." OK, that was definitely a silly joke.

Cheers!
Vicky

Thanks for the real truth about writing... sometimes we readers think that 'it just flows out' and that there's no struggle. But that's usually our impression because of the quality of the final product... And hey!... if the jammies work -- who's to be negative about it... As always, a beautiful cover and I'm looking forward to your latest!
PS can I photoshop my drivers license photo?

Much congrats on your books thus far! And thank you so much for the great insight on the truth about a not so glamorous life as a writer. Although my life isn't glamorous in the first place it was a great assurance that I didn't need to change much. LOL just kidding~ I do need to change my looks but oh well, when time comes.

Kiphia,

I just finished packing for 2 different conferences. What was I thinking? or Not. LOL. But the booksignings will be a lot of fun as it's my chance to talk to readers in person. That's pretty glamorous in my book!

My question for Vicki is any new series or more books coming out or in the works? Thanks for the chance to win.

Chris, there are two more books coming out for The Sinful Scoundrels Series. Book 2 will be out in March 2014. I don't know the date for book 3.

Depends on which day Karen. If I'm having lunch with my author friends,well... Let's just say I clean up very well LOL. Most of the time, I'm in pjs or if I'm really "glamming" it up, I put on shorts. I live in TX after all!

Actually Laurie G, that part is unbelievably fantastic. I got a bit misty-eyed the first time my ARCs for HOW TO MARRY A DUKE arrived.

Hi Josie,

I do have some say in the covers, but honestly, the art department at Forever Romance does such a great job. All three covers will feature jewel tones. It really makes the cover pop.
