Carrie Lofty: Rough Posh

Actor Damian Lewis has played turn-of-the-century control freak Soames Forsythe in The Forsythe Saga, national hero Capt. Dick Winters in Band of Brothers, a regular guy possessed by a Stephen King monster in Dreamcatcher, and most recently, in the TV series Homeland, an ex-captive suspected of being a Muslim terrorist mole.

Why do I mention Mr. Lewis, other than how much I adore him? He mentioned in an interview that he knew, as a British actor with formal Shakespearean training, he fought early to keep from being pigeonholed in period pieces. He admitted that he was posh, but that he was working toward “rough posh.”

Fabulous phrase.

For STARLIGHT, I needed Alex Christie to rough posh. He’s an intellectual and a would-be businessman. A father and steadfast family man. An all-around straight shooter. Yet he has much to fight for, including an inheritance large enough to save his son from his evil father-in-law. In other words, the man was in desperate want of sharp edges and a couple mean fists.

Polly had expected some equivalent of a desk clerk, stooped and thin. Or just the opposite—a fat man with heavy jowls and a pocket watch worth more than her parents’ tenement flat. Instead, Mr. Christie was the worst sort of challenge. He had caught her off guard.
Where was his coat? And his neckcloth? She couldn’t remember the last time she had seen a gentleman so informally dressed—if ever. The shock of finding a hint of chest hair poking out from the collar of such a fine, expensive shirt was dangerously distracting. The contrast of wild and civilized was as pronounced as the stark white cloth lying against his tanned neck.
And despite her indignant temper, she had to admit that Agnes was right: he was a man born of Calton stock. Tall and broad-shouldered, he had a hard jaw designed to absorb life’s toughest punches.

Alex also turned out to be very creative about how to use a walking stick. Who knew?

So aside from Damian Lewis, I decided to spend a few lovely, lovely minutes contemplating a list of actors who fit the bill. And I hope commenters will add their recommendations! Here goes:

Daniel Craig: He wears a tuxedo while carrying a machine gun. He is Bond. So much win.

Michael Fassbender: Dapper and darkly magnetic in X-Men: First Class and Inglourious Basterds, then stripped, bloody and fighting for his life in Centurion, Fassy can put on a villain cape or fur cloak and still be mesmerizing.

Christian Bale: From American Psycho to playboy Bruce Wayne, he has more faces than a deck of cards. The man is scarily chameleonic.

Hugh Jackman: Sure he played Wolverine. Very, very well. I noticed him first, however, as Leo in Kate & Leopold, where his charm and manners were absolutely adorable. Hard to pick a favorite when  a guy can do both so well.

Richard Armitage: Most in Romacelandia know RA from North & South, but he also starred in the British spy drama Spooks. As did his tattoos.

And then there’s the man who inspired Alex. (I’m not revealing who he is, because I hate to spoil reader expectations!) Let’s just say he’s not an actor at all, but a professional soccer player…who also happens to wear the heck out of a tuxedo and model outrageously expensive watches. Rough posh!

To write STARLIGHT, I needed a bit of both. Am I complaining? Oh, no no no…

What’s next for me:

After RT BookReviews 4½ Star Top Pick  STARLIGHT hits the shelves, I'll be looking forward to the release of HIS VERY OWN GIRL, a historical romance set in World War II. It's not women's fiction. It's not literary fiction. It's a genuine romance, complete with sexy times and a happy ending. Look for it September 4th as a Pocket Star digital original novel. I cannot wait to see how readers respond!

I'll also be launching a new co-written pseudonym, Katie Porter, with my long-time friend and critique partner, Lorelie Brown. Our "Vegas Top Guns" series of contemporary erotic romances will launch from Samhain on July 31 with the release of DOUBLE DOWN, which is also a RT BookReviews 4½ Star Top Pick. Two more from the series, INSIDE BET and HOLD 'EM, will follow in August and September. You can learn more about these and future books at our website

Where to find me: http://www.carrielofty.com  /  Twitter: @carrielofty

I'd like to give away a copy of STARLIGHT, and I'll ship anywhere. Just answer the question: Rough posh…does it work for you? And more importantly, any recs?? Either books or movies, lay them on me. I’d love to add to my collection!

Thanks again for having me!

I'm a big Damian Lewis fan. I love the idea of "rough posh". He certainly fits with his latest projects.

I'm in the middle of reading the series A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE by George RR Martin. I can't recommend too highly. It's brilliant reading.

Oh yes, it works for me. I first saw Damian in Band of Brothers and at first, I didn't crush on him...not a fan of redheads. But, he grew on me with his acting talents and that sexy, pouty mouth of his..well, 'nuff said.

I think I'd add Pierce Brosnan as Remington Steele, very rough posh!

But, I know nothing about soccer players...so give up the name of your inspiration for Alex....please, pretty please!

I like Clive Owen, he would fit as rough posh I think.

Well I could go for a man who is Rough Posh every time. What about Sean Bean... he can play that rough posh sort of guy... But one of my favs is Sean Connery... the ulimate sauve posh guy with that rough around the edges bit...

I, too, have been drawn to Damian Lewis for
some time. It broke my heart when the NBC
people cancelled "Life!" Fellows who fit the
Rough Posh description for me include David
Boreanaz and Eddie Cibrian. Also my favorite
NFL running back (who shall remain
unnamed!) from way back in the day.

Rough Posh definitely works for me! Those are some great manly examples of it too! How about an athlete like David Beckham?

I really liked Damian Lewis in a TV show called 'Life' that was on a couple years ago. He played a Police Detective that was wrongly convicted, spent years in prison & when released got a really big settlement. So he played someone with rough edges that was now able to live posh.

It definitely works for me. I liked all of your examples and I agree with Sean Connery and Clive Owen. I'd add Gerard Butler, he seems to fit the bill.

A Damian fan!! Hi! A lot of Americans have only just been introduced to him in HOMELAND. I've been a fan since BAND OF BROTHERS. So gifted.

And don't even get me started on Mr. Martin. I'm torn between waiting for S3 of #thrones or diving into the series ASAP!

Relax your brain and go pick up STARLIGHT. Everything will be just fine ;)

I adored LIFE w/Damian Lewis, and thought his work as Soames is some of the best work I've ever seen. He's amazing. Also, Hugh. Hmmmm. And Fassy - so sassy!

Top line choices, m'dear! Naturally...

I fell in love with Capt. Winters, not Damian. That took a few more roles. And yes! Pierce is a super cool example of rough posh.

(email me carrielofty@gmail.com and I'll send you pictures *g*)

Carrie Lofty said...

Oh, totally! I loved his performance in CHILDREN OF MEN. I think it's my favorite of his. Thanks for being here!

Carrie Lofty said...

Sean Bean and Sean Connery. Nice choices, Kathleen! Both with ties to James Bond! Sean Bean was fantastic in GOLDENEYE. Just the right blend of suave and nasty *g*

Carrie Lofty said...

Oh, me too!! I wanted LIFE to continue, especially after he and Dani finally connected (the way they were meant to!!). I'm glad to have struck on a group of ladies with such fine taste :)

Carrie Lofty said...

Geez! I thought Damian would be too obscure, and I was tempted to leave him out. Glad I didn't! So many quiet fans of the tall ginger-haired Brit. Thanks for being here, erin.

LIFE LIFE LIFE! I'm bouncing over here! So glad he's been grabbing everyone's attention through the last couple years. That means he'll stick around! I'm glad you stopped by, Di :)

Carrie Lofty said...

All these boys seem to lean toward rough...until they put on a suit. If the suit fits, they can play it both ways...and we can drool appropriately! Good to see you, Barbara.

Oooh yes. Beautiful manners, nice polish, but a bit of scruff and dangerous edges beneath! Let's see, you've already got Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig and someone else already brought up Clive Owen, sooo.... we need to add Rufus Sewell. Even when he's playing a bad guy he's got that "rough polish" going. He's starring in Zen on PBS right now, but my favorite roles for him were in "Dangerous Beauty" and as Heath Ledger's rival in "A Knight's Tale." And as a bonus, Aidan Turner, who is not to be missed as Dante Gabriel Rossetti in "Desperate Romantics." (And if that soccer player you mentioned wasn't David Beckham, it should be. ;) )

Soames was so BAD. And yet compelling. And yet justifiable confused by his changing role in life. And so BAD! No way most guys could pull off that much nuance.

I'm totally amazed by the overflowing Damian Lewis love. So cool!

Carrie Lofty said...

Ha! The soccer player DEFINED rough posh. As I mentioned to Karen H above, if you email me (carrielofty@gmail.com) I'll tell you who he is and send a few pics *g*

Rufus is adorable, which means I'll have to check out ZEN. I just looked it up and that looks awesome. And don't get me started on poor Heath... :(

Have a great week!

Rough posh? Now that's a new one for me but I think I can go for it.

I think rough posh is a perfect combo, and all those actors mentioned above are good choices, except Christian Bale. He's too much of a diva, although Fassbender gives off that vibe to me too.

Give them a chance. Yes, I think you'll like them ;)

Rough posh sounds like a winner to me!! I'm so glad to 'find' a new defination!!

Carrie Lofty said...

Bale...I have to agree. I used to adore him. He's kinda shown a too few many true colors over the last few years, which shows the importance of maintaining a little mystique as an actor! And time will tell with Fassbender. He's so incredibly talented that I hope these two years of movies almost back to back don't ruin his chances of being an amazing force in movie. Thanks, Rosie!

I haven't heard of Rough Posh before this but I am warming up to it. It definitely fits. I've always found the dark, brooding, a little rough around the edges heroes appealing.

Rough posh sounds very good! :) I had to think immediately of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond and as Remington Steele. And the professional soccer player isn't *cough*Xabi Alonso*cough* by chance?

OMG - I LOVE Damian Lewis! Have been a huge fan of his since Band of Brothers. Good to see so many also love him. Oh, and he's a good actor too!

Carrie Lofty said...

Damian said it and I knew immediately what he meant. And then only wanted more. Enjoy!

Carrie Lofty said...

It totally applies, doesn't it? I have to think that most romance heroes have an element of it. Unless they're totally alpha Scottish Highlander types who wouldn't know to wear a suit if their clan depended on it. They're cool too ;)

Carrie Lofty said...

Yes, Pierce. I loved Goldeneye, if only for the ridiculous coolness of the opening "I'll jump and get onto a falling plane" scene. And his fight with Fame Janssen (Xenia). If you really want to know who the soccer player was, email me. I'll tell you and send pics: carrielofty@gmail.com. I've already revealed him to a few curious ladies :)

Carrie Lofty said...

Cavill and Rhys Meyers--yes!! Badasses who clean up very, very well. They also do barely clothed well *g*

Carrie Lofty said...

No matter how much I loved him in LIFE or THE FORSYTHE SAGA, he will always be Capt. Winters to me. (I can't even call him Maj. Winters. Don't know why.) But that's not a bad thing, is it? Thanks for being here!

Thank you, Filia! I adore my cover, but I'd trade it for a date with one of those guys. I don't need to kiss them or anything...just have dessert and listen to them be awesome. Glad you stopped by!

Rough posh all the way! You can add Alexander Skargard, he's a hottie. And what about Chris Hemsworth, he's australian but the accent is sooo dreamy!

I've never heard of it. Huh. But I'm seriously glad everyone else "gets" the term and appreciates that sort of hero! Good to see you here, Maureen

I'd agree with you wholeheartedly on both except...I really don't go for blonds! Isn't that weird? I know intellectually that I should be drooling, but nope! Which means...more for you! Glad you stopped by, Gisele :)
