Winter in Queensland

by Anna Campbell

Firstly, I'd like to start today's blog with a big apology. I went out and took LOTS of really gorgeous pictures of long rays of light over water and local birds - I remember with particular fondness a shot of a heron against the sinking sun.

And then my camera decided it really didn't want to talk to my computer.

I've tried all sorts of things to fix it and nothing has worked. Sigh.

I should have known when I put a jolly little post on Facebook about how much I love my digital camera (I only turned digital last November - yeah, I know, I'm a Luddite) that I was asking for trouble. Double sigh.

Luckily I already had two shots transferred that I took a few weeks ago of a beach up the road from me. You'll see I'm not exaggerating when I say that winter here in South East Queensland is the most beautiful season. And a great time to visit if you're contemplating coming to Australia!

Look at that blue sky and those azure seas and that pristine beach (well, except for the bit of lifesaving gear in the corner but you'll be glad of that if you get in trouble in the surf).

And I reiterate - it's MIDWINTER!!!!

Temperatures right now are really pleasant. Days are cool and crisp and sunny, nights are cold enough to make it lovely to snuggle down into bed with a good book (or whatever else you prefer to snuggle with, snicker).

Of course, there's the occasional gray miserable day but not enough to spoil the overall impression that this is a lovely time of year down here.

So when are you all coming down?

Oh, and I'm off to Melbourne right down in the south of Australia for the Romance Writers of Australia conference this week. Cold? I think so! BRRRRRR! I'm not sure what email access I'll have but I'll do my best to get back - if not immediately, as soon as I can.

Happy winter, Aussies!

What's the weather doing where you are? I know temperatures have been quite revoltingly hot in parts of the Northern Hemisphere this year (and last year, when I was there to suffer the heat). Let's get all English and have a conversation about the weather!

Oh, I miss those gorgeous Brissie winters!

We had a few days of above-average temps here in Sydney last week, but now we're back to 6-degree days and 18-degree days. As long as it doesn't rain, I'm happy with that.

Have a great time in Melbourne!

The weather here is mild and cool which is how most of the summer was. It was only last week that we saw any real sunshine. Oh well, it beats blistering heat.

Those two shots you were able to upload are lovely. Queensland looks so picturesque. Wishing you a wonderful time in Aussie.

We're in the midst of a triple digit
run of temperatures here in Houston,
almost two weeks straight! And our temps are not as bad as those in North Texas!

Your weather looks and sounds just so
lovely - would love to plan a trip in
your direction! Enjoy the conference!

We are desperate for rain here in Texas and especially in my area. I have to water flowers every day to keep them alive, since the temperature keeps hitting 100 degrees. Soon they will only let me be watering them twice a week.

Hi,

Well since i'm from Fiji it's mostly sunny and humid although the last couple of days have been a bit cold for our weather.

Have fun at the conference.

I feel so bad for the people in Texas and the drought conditions they have been enduring. I live up close to Lake Michigan and we have a hot, wet and humid summer. I sure wish I could send all our rain to Texas. Our basement hasn't dried out ever since May. Our dehumidifier has been working overtime!

Have a great fun at the conference!

Had NO email access when I was away. Sorry I was AWOL on EMAIL.

Vanessa, thanks for swinging by. I realized when I was in Melbourne in a cold August quite how lucky I am in Qld.

Thanks, Na. Such a pain about the photos not downloading. A friend of mine has a gadget that might help so I might be able to put them up next month. Fingers crossed!

Pat, it would be lovely to see you! I've got some overseas friends coming to stay next weekend (an American couple and an English couple). I hope the lovely weather continues for their visit.

Gladys, I've got quite a few friends in Texas and they've told me how terrible your drought has been. Praying for rain for you.

Thanks, Sonali. It was brill! I'd love to visit Fiji one day!

Michele, isn't it frustrating when the rain falls on the wrong place? My tiny little corner of Australia has had regular rain for years and was about the only place in Australia that wasn't drought-declared a few years ago. My friends used to come up to see me to wash their cars because the water restrictions a few miles in either direction were really draconian.

Here in Toowoomba we are having absolutely beautiful weather. I'm waiting for the final cold, blustery HURRAH!!! before Spring.

Mary, it's warmer here too - considerably less wintry than last week. I've got overseas visitors coming this weekend. I'm hoping it's like this - they'll love it. As you say, that final blustery blast is still waiting in the wings, though!
