Demons, Vampires, and Psychics -- Oh My! - Michelle Rowen

by Michelle Rowen

***Winner of the signed copy of either Something Wicked or Touch and Go is "Kristen". Congrats! Please contact me at michelle@michellerowen.com with your choice of book and your mailing address to claim your prize. Thanks everyone for all the great comments!***

A family member asked me, when I recently told her about one of my latest deals, "Can't you think of any ideas that don't have vampires in them?"

I think she might prefer that I'd write about forensic CSI agents, or small town ladies who uncover criminals, or, well, something that could exist in the Real World. I don't think that she appreciates the paranormal all that much.

Well, that makes one of us.

So... can I think of ideas that don't have vampires in them? Sure I can. But I just don't wanna.

I write paranormals -- or, to be more specific, fantasy. It's what I do. And yes, the ideas I get are about things that don't necessarily exist in the Real World.

And I'm totally okay with that.

I have been, or will be published in young adult, romance, and coming up in 2013, mystery as well. And all of these books focus on vampires, demons, ghosts, angels, witches, werewolves, and psychics. Not necessarily in the same book.

It's beyond fun giving a character something out of the ordinary to deal with -- a new out of control power; an attraction to someone who isn't just the bad boy, but a literal demon; a thirst for blood even though they're just still the girl next door.

Yes, my name is Michelle Rowen, and I write paranormal novels. And I wouldn't have it any other way!

My most recent releases are SOMETHING WICKED, the second book in my Living in Eden trilogy about a demon named Darrak who must possess a woman named Eden every night. Darrak is, quite possibly, the funnest (?) hero I've ever written. He's sexy, snarky, protective, selfish, selfless, and madly in love with my heroine.

In my second Harlequin Blaze, TOUCH AND GO, I pair up a couple of sexy psychics who work for the Paranormal Assessment and Recovery Agency as they head to the Bahamas to solve a mystery, and my heroine Carrie attempts to figure out why my hero Patrick is a completely hands-off kind of guy. Hint: he isn't for long!

I'm going to give away one of these books to a randomly selected commenter who answers this question: what's your favorite paranormal character? ie: vampire, demon, etc. Feel free to use specific examples from one of your favorite books! I'll be back to pick a winner tomorrow, Thursday, November 18th at 9:00 pm EST. Good luck!

Happy Reading!

Michelle xoxo

I am very much a vampire fan. I read to escape and reading paranormal takes me into a world where I can do just that. While I enjoy a fluffy romance from time to time, I find myself going back to the bad boy vampires or bad ones gone good. I absolutely LOVE Zhadist in J.R. Ward's BDB series and Dimitri in Richelle Mead's VA books.

I am excited to hear about your YA project. I find myself reading more and more of that lately.

Demon. And if anyone had asked me some years back, I doubt I could have even imagined answering so. However, paranormal romance and urban fantasy stories have since demonstrated their appeal rather thoroughly. And I usually do love vampire romance, as well. However, I never really loved the whole blood for sustenance thing.

Ooh-ooh ... I have one: how about a supernatural character who isn't part of a fad? This is a supernatural character who is completely unambiguous ("I'm a bad vampire!"/"I'm a good vampire!" "I'm a vampire who says stuff made to sound like Romanian when I don't have the foggiest idea how to speak it, so I'm ... vampyyyrrrr!"), everything has been laid on the mantle of this character, and this character is the root of it all: Satan. Satan is, by far, the most revered, most powerful, most long-standing supernatural literary figure of all time, from Dante to Goethe's Faust to -- you name it. Satan, hands down, is my favorite. And it's amazing how he doesn't get all the teen-age girl action; oh, that's right, this comes from the female fantasy of getting a bad boy who wants to change, only for you, and become good because the fresh, young vagina has these mystical powers. Satan isn't going to change for you, baby, he's just gonna rock your world and then leave ... then you're living in a cardboard box in the alley doing Lord knows what for your next fix of Satan Love. Okay, yeah ... Satan's my favorite.

Hi Michelle! I love paranormals! Always have. Picking a favorite is so hard! There have been some awesome characters over the years. From Angel and Buffy to Edward and Bella and so many in between. But if I had to pick just one right now, I have to go with Edward Cullen. He is just so damn sexy! And I must admit the fact that he's played by Robert Pattinson is just a HUGE plus! So yeah I have to go with Edward. What can I say I just love me some sparkly Vampire!

Thanks for the contest and Have a wonderful day!

If I have to pick just one, then I would definitely say vampire. I have been a fan of vampire stories since I was a little girl sitting on my grandpa's lap while he told me stories and my favorites were when he told me about his travels in Eastern Europe and about vampire legends.

A witch. Definitely pretty & good witches.

I love the fae, but they're so rarely used, which makes me a little sad. If I had to pick something more popular, I'd have to say my favorite would be vampires, especially the "bad boy turned good" ones. But I'm for pretty much any paranormal character that goes from bad to good.

Shifter is my favorite, or more specific walker as in Mercy Thomspon.

I like vampires, but I also like ghosts, especially those that stay around because they've been wronged or murdered and can't go until their soul is at peace.

Hi Michelle,

One of my favorite paranormal characters is Sherrilyn Kenyon's Acheron. We still don't know everything that he is :-)

BTW, love your books!

I am an avid reader. I read all kinds of books, but this genre is my dessert, my Godiva Chocolate, but with all the pleasure and no calories. Please keep them coming!

Vampires were at the top of my list for quite a long period of time, but now shifters are at the top. Mainly big cats. They are great in stories and to read their adventures is fun.

Hey Michelle! See mine is a toss up between Vampires and Demons. I never liked Demons before but after I read Gena Showalters The Darkest Night I am absolutely in love! hehe This is great!! I love the struggle between their demon sides and their humanity same with the Vamps. I dont know why but I love reading about them overcoming what they are "supposed" to be and what they want to be!

Thank you for a chance to win!!

Although I do want to smack most of the Vamps in Butcher's Dresden books. They really aren't all that smexy. On the other hand, the demons he deals with crack me up no end for the most part. Or he kills them.

I think it would have to be a toss between whatever Jericho Barrons is from Karen Marie Monings Fever series and Eric from Charlaine Harris's series.

I get shivers whenever I think of Eric calling Sookie 'my lover'.

Also, I really *really!* like Acheron from Sherrilyn Kennyon's books. Humm.... ;)

My favorite character in books right now are the Seminus Demons created by Larissa Ione, Wraith in particular... I love the idea that a big bad demon boy can be "tamed" by one little female, especially that one! Plus if you have read the books or read anything about them Wraith is the ultimate package, hot and sexy and tougher than old shoe leather to kill!

Then there are the demons like "Perry" in the Jill Kismet books by Lilith Saintcrow, pure evil incarnate with no redeeming qualities and yet at the same time a character you love to hate!

I am a huge vampire fan and absolutely love Michelle's books. But I'd have to say it's Barrons from the Fever Series that is my favorite paranormal "entity".

Thanks so much for the opportunity! I've been dying to start this series. I have her Demon Princess and Immortality Bites and enjoy them.

I love all vampires...Wrath from J.R. Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood is one of my faves. He is blind and angry because of it, yet tender and vulnerable with his wife Beth.
