What are you reading - and where? by Kate Walker

It’s November 1st. I just turned over another page on my office calendar to start off a brand new month. And as I did so, a nursery rhyme from long ago came into my head. It’s the one that begins:

January brings the snow,
Makes our feet and fingers glow.

And then goes through all the rest of the months, The lines for November go:

Dull November brings the blast,
Then the leaves go whirling past.

They couldn’t really be more appropriate to the sort of day we have outside. The wind has been howling round the house, whirling the leaves wildly and throwing heavy cold rain at the window panes. After a short but beautiful ‘Indian summer in October, winter has definitely come a lot closer as soon as November dawned. But once I’d done my daily walk - getting drenched and feeling frozen as I did so – had my shower and I started to feel virtuous as a result, the idea of staying in and keeping warm really appealed. And then my DH lit a real fire in the grate so that the cats and I could get really cosy and curl up beside it and it seemed just the perfect place to sit and read to my heart’s content.

OK, I can’t quite do that just yet. I sent in my latest novel to my editor at the beginning of the week and my editor has asked for some ‘tweaks’ so I need to get those done before I can really indulge in a true reading binge, but I don’t think they’ll take long and then I can look forward to getting through the huge TBR pile I have waiting for me. (Well part of it.) And then the fire is going to be so welcome.

But the I had an email from my sister who lives in Australia where of course everything is ‘upside down’ and so she’s heading into summer. So she’s talking about taking her TBR books out into the garden (also with her cats!) and soon, hopefully, on to the beach. (The cats will stay at home then.) And that made me remember how much I loved sitting outside under a tree . . . or on a beach . . . and reading. I’ve been trying to decide which is my absolute favourite place to be when I have a pile of books I just want to dive into. In the end, I couldn’t choose. OK, I admit that right now the fireside wins but that’s because the weather is so dreadful and cold – and WET.

But it made me wonder – do you have a favourite place to curl up with your latest bookshop buys and lose yourself in a story? By the fire? On a beach? In the woods? By the pool? And what books are at the top of your TBR pile right now? I have One Night Mistress, Convenient Wife by Anne McAllister and Her Desert Dream by Liz Fielding Liz sent me the first part of this Trading Places Duo – A Christmas Angel for the Billionaire and I loved that. But first I have to finish tweaking this Greek hero – and then I’m really going to read . . .and read . . .

Tell me what you plan to read and where and I’ll get Sid the Cat to pick a winner of a book from my backlist – that’s if I can get him away from the fire!

Kate Walker’s latest Presents title Kept For Her Baby is still available in Presents EXTRA. One reviewer called this book “a masterpiece that will live in the hearts of the reader for many years to come!” (We Write Romance)

You can find out more about Kate and her books on her website or her blog
Sid has picked his winners - and he's picked two! (Well I couldn't choose between them when he grabbed the cat treats)
So would Emmanuelle and VirginiaC please email me and I'll sort out your books.

I always like to read in my comfy chair with a mug of hot chocolate or a latte and love the smell of a fragrant candle burning. In my TBR pile right now I have:
The Maverick's Greek Island Mistress by Kelly Hunter
Her Very Own Family by Trish Milburn
My Sexy Greek Summer by Marie Donovan
Going Down Hard by Tawny Weber

Love those Harlequins

I curl up on the couch next to the wood stove this time of year.
On the top of my TBR pile is The Mane Squeeze by Shelly Laurenston.

Hi Linda

Your cosy comfy chair and a mug of somethign tasty soudns a perfect winter reading spot. And then your choice of reading seems designed to take you away - to a Greek island perhaps? THtat where I've been all afternoon in my imagination as I work on my latest book! It was a real change from the cold wet day outside

Oh Estella - a wood stove sounds fabulous. Our coal fire is lovely but the scent of burning logs is something special - particularly if they are pine or apple or some other scented wood

I don't know Shelly's books but I hope you enjoy that one

Hello, Kate! I am finishing up a round of paranormal and supernatural reads for Halloween. Next, I will be starting on my Thanksgiving and Christmas reads. In between all this, I squeeze in my beloved Harlequins and other romance reads. I just read Branded by the Sheriff by Delores Fossen.

I'm not reading anything at all. Really! I'm doing NaNoWriMo this month and focusing on writing instead!

Yeah, I don't believe me either. My TBR pile is simply too tempting for me to resist. I'll be curling up in my fake leather club chair or my pretty blue chair to read Anne McAllister's One-Night Mistress, Convenient Wife, Lisa Klein's Lady Macbeth's Daughter, and Lisa Ann Sandell's A Map of the Known World. I'm on a bit of a YA kick right now.

But I'll only be reading them after I meet my writing goal each day!

I am still trying to find time to finish Donna VanLiere's Christmas Secret. Then I want to start Susan Mallery's last in the Titan Series - Straight from the Hip. Want to see how she makes that rotten half brother be the redeemed hero.

I usually read in my big comfy chair next to the window.

Hi! Thanks for offering a great blog!
I usually start a book while walking a city trail. I try to stop reading before "guy gets girl" so that I can finish the book in bed that night. There's nothing like sweet dreams!
I just started Janice Lynn's THE DOCTOR'S MEANT-TO-BE MARRIAGE. So far so good! Next will be Lisa Dale's SIMPLE WISHES.
I recently read this book called CORDERO'S FORCED BRIDE by a new author named Kate Walker. I wonder if you've heard of her (LOL)! I absolutely loved how it made sense throughout the entire story, I liked how the H/h talked with each other, I enjoyed the realistic details and could imagine everything happening, and I even wished I was the heroine! My only complaint? I think the publisher should have had the heroine in a pink dress on the cover. If that's all I can be negative about, I think this book should be rated a 10+/10!

I like to read in my bedroom on my bed. It could be morning, afternoon, evening...whenever. I almost always have to be laying down to read. I used to hate reading in school because we had to sit in chairs and it just bothered me. Comfort is my fav thing!

The next book Im reading right now is "Caleb" by Sarhah McCarty and I'm hoping to read the new Eloisa James this week too!

Happy late Halloween Kate :)

I just finished Debra Mullin's "To Ruin a Duke". Next up, Carole Mortimore's "The Virgin Secretary's Impossible Boss", to be followed by LuAnn McLane's Redneck Cinderella.

I read on a comfy loveseat... no fireplace down here in Florida.

I read in bed! - it's my only chance of peace. And I have the latest Stephanie Laurens, 'The Untamed Bride', the first of the Black Cobra Quartet, to read next.

My typical reading setting : comfy chair and a big hot mug of Tea (hazzelnut tea these days with a huge spoonful of honey in it).
Just last night I read Bed of Roses by Nora Roberts and it was DELICIOUS. How can she do that after all thoses books is pure magic ;-)

Hi Virginia

That's interesting - do you usually read books that fit with the seasons - like Halloween or Chtristmas? I usually end up reading the Christmas specials in summer and vice versa!

And Sid would like to know if the handsome cat in your pic is really yours?

Hi Lynz - and good luck with the NaNo. I don't enter because that sort of concentrated writing is what I usualy end up doing on the last section of mybook

I hope you enjoy Anne's book - I want to get to that next

Hi Pat C

Your reading place sounds like one of mine - but I don't have the candles. Perhaps that's because I'm afraid the cats will knock them off. Hope that TBR pile doesn;t explode just yet

Kate Walker said...

Hello Pat L - that Susan Mallery book does sound intriguing, doesn't it? It's always fascinating when an author turns a villain/no good into a hero - I'm interested to see how it's done

Kate Walker said...

Hi Mary!

A chair by the window does have almost the bets of both worlds - you can see the world outside - and get lost in the world of the book.

Kate Walker said...

Hi Laney! How great to learn that you;v e discovered a new writer ;o) Kate Walker, hmm - I've heard of her. So glad you enjoyed Cordero's Forced Bride - and did you know that Kate has a new book out in Presents Extra right now? ;o)

(I'm honoured by the 10+/10)

Hi Rachie. I love to read in bed but my problem there is that I tend to fall asleep and never finish the book. But sometimes it's just the only place to be.

Kate Walker said...

Hello Laurie - no, I don't suppose you'd need a fireplace much in Florida. I have Carole Mortimer's books on my TBR pile too - I always used to read her books before I was published and I was so honoured when I got to meet her

Bonjour Emmanuelle - Hazelnut tea ? I've never tried that. Must look out for it.

And I so agree with you about Nora - she just seems to never stop writing. She's amazing!

Thank you so very much! I emailed my snail mail addy.

I love "Seasonal" books all year round. Just in the last year, I started collecting them to read during the actual season or holiday. I have a Christmas box that I add to all throughout the year, and then I dive in during the holidays!

My "computer cat" is a composite of all my real cats who climb all over me and the keyboards when I am online!
